समय, शब्द और स्व-प्रबंधन का अभ्यास

11वीं की पढ़ाई के दौरान ही पत्रकारिता में कदम रखने वाले केशव ने आईआईएमसी आने से पहले बेगूसराय टाइम्स, राष्ट्रीय सहारा और हिन्दुस्तान समाचार पटना में प्रमुख पदों पर काम किया. अंतर्राष्ट्रीय घटनाक्रमों में केशव की खास दिलचस्पी है.

नमस्ते! आप इस ब्लॉग को पढ़ रहे हैं. मतलब आप अपनी तैयारी के प्रति गंभीर हैं. आपने अब तक जो पढ़ा है उसे दोबारा देख लें. और हां, आप लिखने का अभ्यास पहले से कर ही रहे होंगे. क्या आपने अपना लिखा हुआ किसी अनुभवी लेखक वरिष्ठ पत्रकार को दिखाया है? आप इसे किसी शिक्षक को भी दिखा सकते हैं. उनके निर्देशों को अमल में लाना आपकी लेखन क्षमता को विकसित करेगा.

रोजाना अख़बार पढ़कर कैसा लगता है? इस विषय पर सोचना और उसको लिखने की कोशिश करना भी एक अच्छा अभ्यास हो सकता है. बीते पांच साल के प्रश्नपत्र आपने इस ब्लॉग पर देखे होंगे. इस से आपको एक अंदाज़ा मिला होगा. इस ब्लॉग के अन्य लेख आपको और अधिक शार्प कर चुके होंगे. क्या आपने अपनी परीक्षा खुद ली है? प्रवेश परीक्षा के आखिरी दिनों में यह कोशिश हमें बहुत मजबूत करती है.

हाल के दिनों में मशहूर हुए हस्तियों की जानकारी, महत्वपूर्ण घटनाक्रमों के साथ आर्थिक गतिविधियां, खेल जगत और राजनितिक उतार चढ़ाव परीक्षा के लिहाज से हमसे अटेंशन की उम्मीद रखते हैं. पत्रकार बनने की इच्छा है तो मीडिया जगत पर नज़र रख ही रहे होंगे. इस विषय में कुछ न्यूज़ पोर्टल आपकी मदद कर सकता है. वेब जर्नालिज्म के दौर में इससे जुड़े सवाल की पूरी गुंजाइश है. हां, कंप्यूटर और इंटरनेट के बारे जानकरी के साथ आप परीक्षा में अच्छा प्रदर्शन कर सकते हैं.

अनुवाद का एक सवाल और वह भी बहुत स्कोरिंग होता है. इसके लिए लगातार अभ्यास से बढ़कर दूसरा और कोई उपाय नहीं है. अंतर्राष्ट्रीय घटनाचक्र, कई देशों में चल रहे जनांदोलन, अमेरिका-भारत-पकिस्तान के संबंध, विकिलीक्स के खुलासे, विकिलीक्स की पत्रकारिता, नीरा राडिया प्रकरण, निजता का मामला, क्रिकेट विश्व कप, कॉमनवेल्थ गेम्स और घोटाला, 2जी स्पेकट्रम घोटाला, भूमि अधिग्रहण कानून के साथ ही बिनायक सेन और अयोध्या जमीन विवाद पर आए फैसले पर सरसरी निगाह डाल लेनी चाहिए. इसके अलावा खुद से भी कई मुद्दे तलाश कर उस पर लिखने की तैयारी होनी चाहिए.

समय, शब्द और स्व-प्रबंधन आपको हर लिखित परीक्षा में कामयाब बना सकता है. भाषा, शैली, शब्द ज्ञान, सामान्य जागरूकता, लेखन कौशल इन सबकी जांच परीक्षा में आमतौर पर की जाती है. आईआईएमसी के सवाल आपकी यादाश्त और समझदारी दोनों के हिसाब से तय किए जाते हैं. आपका संतुलित और स्पष्ट जबाव परीक्षकों को प्रभावित करता है और आपको सफल बनाता है.

सुना ही होगा आपने "Practice Makes Perfect". तैयारी करते रहने से आत्मविश्वास बनता और बढ़ता है. यह हर जगह बना रहना चाहिए. इसमें एक बात और जोड़ लीजिये "Constant Practice Often Excels Even Talent."

कहने का मतलब है कि आखिरी दिनों में गैर-जरूरी चीजों से बचना भी बहुत जरूरी है. प्रसन्नचित्त होकर पढना-लिखना जारी रखें. अच्छे से भोजन करें, नींद लें और तल्लीन होकर परीक्षा दें.

पूरी तरह एक्सप्रेसिबल रहें

पत्रकारिता में अपना करियर बनाने की चाह रखने वाले हर किसी की यह ख्वाहिश होती है कि वह भारतीय जनसंचार संस्थान में एडमिशन ले क्योंकि यह ऐसी जगह है जहाँ मीडिया जगत की दिग्गज हस्तियों से सीखने का मौका मिलता है. हिंदी पत्रकारिता विभाग के अध्यक्ष डॉक्टर आनंद प्रधान के सानिध्य में पढने पर मायने बहुत ख़ास हो जाते हैं. अनेक मीडिया संस्थानों से जुड़े रह चुके दिलीप मंडल और दूसरे शिक्षक अपने अपने विषयों के साथ पूरा न्याय करते हैं.

आईआईएमसी की एक बड़ी ख़ास बात यह है कि यहां विद्यार्थी और शिक्षक का रिश्ता पारम्परिक शिक्षण संस्थानों जैसा नहीं है. हर विद्यार्थी अपनी बात पूरी दृढ़ता से रखने के लिए स्वतंत्र है. किसी भी संस्थान में विद्यार्थियों को अगर यह फ्री स्पेस दिया जाता है तो उसका सर्वांगीण विकास सम्भव हो पाता है. मेरा यह कहना गलत नहीं होगा कि हिंदी पत्रकारिता में यह लोकतान्त्रिक माहौल यहां के शिक्षकों की पहल का नतीजा है.

आईआईएमसी की बात करते समय अगर मैं एडमिन डिपार्टमेंट के चावला सर की बात न करूं तो यह गलत होगा. यहां का पूरा स्टाफ अपने काम में चुस्ती से जुटा रहता है. विद्यार्थियों को वक्त की पाबंदी का सबसे बढ़िया उदाहरण इनसे मिल सकता है.

जहां तक हिंदी पत्रकारिता में प्रवेश लेने के लिए तैयारी की बात है तो उसके लिए बहुत ज्यादा कुछ कहने की मुझे जरूरत नहीं है. पत्रकारिता में करियर बनाने की चाह रखने वालों से यह उम्मीद की जाती है कि उनके लक्ष्य स्पष्ट हों. अब उस लक्ष्य तक कैसे पहुंचना है यह उस व्यक्ति को अपनी काबिलियत के हिसाब से खुद तय करना होगा.

चूंकि यह ऐसा मंच है जहां मैं आने वाले आईआईएमसियन्स से अनुभव बांट सकती हूं इसलिए मैंने पहले आप सब के सामने आईआईएमसी की स्थिति रखी ताकि इसके मुख्य आकर्षण आपके लिए प्रलोभन बन जाएं और आप यहां प्रवेश पाने के लिए पूरी क्षमता लगा दें.

यहां का एग्जाम देने के लिए मैंने अख़बारों पर बारीकी से नजर रखी थी. इसके अलावा खबरों के ट्रीटमेंट पर भी ध्यान देती थी. लिखित परीक्षा पास करने के लिए महत्वपूर्ण है कि खबरों और परिवर्तनों पर नजर रखें. पिछले प्रश्न पत्र आपके लिए मददगार हो सकते हैं. साक्षात्कार के दौरान पूरी तरह एक्सप्रेसिबल रहें ताकि आपकी बात सामने वाले तक सही ढंग से पहुंच सके.

एक बात और. यहां हर तरह के विचार का स्वागत है बशर्ते सोच तार्किक हो. यकीन मानिए आईआईएमसी में बिताया गया यह एक साल आपको ताउम्र याद रहेगा.

सीमित समय में जवाब का शब्द प्रबंधन

भारतीय जनसंचार संस्थान की प्रवेश परीक्षा होने वाली है. कहने की जरूरत नहीं है कि इंजीनियरिंग के क्षेत्र में जो महत्व आईआईटी. का है, मेडिकल के क्षेत्र में जो महत्व एम्स का है, मैनेजमेंट के क्षेत्र में जो महत्व आईआईएम का है वही महत्व पत्रकारिता के क्षेत्र में आईआईएमसी का है. देश का अव्वल पत्रकारिता संस्थान आईआईएमसी कभी मेरे लिए भी सपना था. आज मैं यह सोच कर रोमांचित हो जाता हूँ कि मैं इस संस्थान में रेडिओ एवं टेलीविजन पत्रकारिता का छात्र रहा हूँ.

यूँ तो किसी भी पत्रकारिता संस्थान में दम नहीं है कि वह नौ महीने में किसी को पत्रकार बना दे. जो लोग ये सोचकर आईआईएमसी आने की सोच रहे हैं कि यहां कुछ घोलकर पिला दिया जाएगा और वे पत्रकार बन जायेंगे, वे गलफ़त में हैं. तलवार आपको बनकर आना होगा. आईआईएमसी सिर्फ उसपे धार चढ़ाएगी. यहां विभिन्न तरह के प्रशिक्षण द्वारा मीडिया के गुर सिखाये जाते हैं जो मीडिया इंडस्ट्री में काम आते हैं.

जब मैं पिछले साल प्रवेश परीक्षा देने आया था तो मुझे विश्वास नहीं था कि मेरा चयन हो पायेगा क्योंकि मैंने इसकी तैयारी के लिए कोई कोचिंग सेंटर ज्वाइन नहीं किया था. जब मैं परीक्षा सेंटर पहुंचा तो महंगी गाड़ियों से आये परीक्षार्थियों को देखकर मेरा आत्म-विश्वास डगमगाने लगा था. लेकिन 'सवाल पुस्तिका' देखकर मेरी बांछें खिल गईं और मैंने पूरे पेपर अच्छे से कर दिए.

मैं ये बात इसलिए शेयर कर रहा हूँ कि मेरे जैसे कई मेरे दोस्त होंगे जो गाँव से आकर इस बार आईआईएमसी प्रवेश परीक्षा में बैठ रहे होंगे पर उनमें भी आत्म-विश्वास की कमी होगी. कई साथी मोटी रकम देकर कटवारियासराय या बेरसराय में कोचिंग कर रहे होंगे. फिर भी खुद में कमी झलक रही होगी.

जो मित्र प्रवेश परीक्षा देने जा रहे हैं उन्हें मेरी तरफ से सलाह है कि अपने आत्मविश्वास को सातवें आसमान पर रखें और निम्नलिखित बातों को धयान में रखते हुए तैयारी जारी रखें:-

1. पिछले छ: महीने की सभी महत्वपूर्ण घटनाओं के बारे में जानकारी रखें
2. पिछले छ: महीने के कोई भी दो समाचार पत्रों का संपदकीय पृष्ठ पढ़ जाएँ. ज्यादा से ज्यादा अखबार पढ़ें
3. ट्यूनीशिया, लीबिया, मिस्र यानि अरब देशों की क्रांति का गहराई से अध्ययन करें
4. आदर्श घोटाला से लेकर कॉमनवेल्थ घोटाला तथा 2 -जी स्पेक्ट्रम घोटाला का अध्ययन करें
5. सरकारी लोकपाल तथा जन-लोकपाल बिल
6. जन-लोकपाल बिल से घोटालों को रोकने में कितनी सफलता मिलेगी?
7. अन्ना हज़ारे का आन्दोलन लोकतान्त्रिक दृष्टि से कितना सही?
8. भूमि अधिग्रहण बिल
9. पिछले 6 महीने में कौन चर्चित रहा और क्यों (1 अंक के दस सवाल में पूछा जा सकता है)
10. पांच राज्यों में विधानसभा चुनावों के नतीजों की समीक्षा. खासकर बंगाल में वाम-मोर्चा की हार.

समय तथा शब्द प्रबंधन पर विशेष ध्यान देने की जरूरत है. सवाल मिलने के बाद आप ये देख लें कि किस सवाल का जबाव कितने शब्द में देने हैं. आप समय प्रबंधन कर लें. अशुद्धियां कम रखें तथा जो पूछा जा रहा है अपना जबाव वहीं फोकस करें.

See As Much As You Can

Shivani Tiwari, Entrance topper AD-PR 2010-2011 is a Graduate in Economics. With an innate flair for observation and writing she got into the advertising industry where she could experiment with her sense of “logical creativity”.

Hinging hugely on Articulation, Awareness, PRoficiency and Brevity, the IIMC AD-PR entrance exam is not the toughest nut to crack. What is definitely required is to be constantly in touch with the latest and the newest of the brands and conversations surrounding them. These brands might be companies or celebrities too. A daily snacking of advertisements doing the rounds on different channels and of the various issues hovering over news channels needs to be done.

For a course that encapsulates creativity and opinion building in its syllabi, it’s really crucial for the aspirants to show their affinity for the same through their attempt. Practice writing on abstract thoughts which would help you get the hang of the shorter questions where instant creativity is called for. Try thinking ahead of the stereotypical ideas and out of the compartmentalized avenues. Innovative expressions should be the core of your answers keeping logical sense of the same at the back of the mind.

Read as much as you can from business to celebrities to politics to issues spanning different fields. In addition to widely reading, it is crucial to critically analyze the issues you read, build opinions around it and at the same time dissect them well. 3 Easy Steps to IIMC

Sumit Jha is a 2010-11 English Journalism passout. A mechanical engineer by education, Sumit worked for Infosys before chosing journalism as a career. He has been recruited by Reuters in an on campus recruitment.

The first step, to me, is the most important one. Personally, I think journalism is a little more than just a profession. One has to love news and the process of news making. Getting into journalism just because one thinks it’s glamorous or because everyone around you is appearing for various entrance tests is the most fatal mistake anyone can make. Once you have convinced yourself that journalism is the profession that you can excel in, begins the next step.

The second step deals with the actual preparation for the entrance exams. As far as IIMC is concerned, it’s not as rigorous as other prestigious exams like UPSC or Medical or Engineering. One can prepare while working part time or even full time. All you have to do is to keep in touch with the recent news. Since the question paper deals with important events all around the world that have taken place during the last 12 or so month, its advisable that you go through news making events of the past one year. For those who have started their preparations late, a yearly digest that contains important events could serve well.

It’s also important that you know the basics of any issue. In-depth knowledge helps and internet could be a big help in that regard. It’s also imperative that you are well versed with both the sides of any issue. Reading opinion, features and editorials would give you a vantage point and would also help you crystallize your own thinking. So, make newspapers and news portals your best friends till the exams.

The third step deals with putting on paper what you know. Start making list of issues that have made news recently and that’s not very difficult. In fact you would realize that questions would be asked on more or less those same topics which you had considered important. For example, Anna Hazare’s fast, 2G spectrum scam, Bihar assembly election, the upsurge in Middle East, Osama Bin Laden and his killing and the just concluded assembly elections are almost sure to feature on the question paper in one way or the other.

The writing part, however, demands extreme discipline. The questions usually have word limit that ranges from 150 to 200 words. It’s very important to condense all the facts and opinion in that limit. A candidate must start writing at least a couple of pieces everyday on important topics adhering to the word limit. Sometimes more information leads to confusion in writing as one doesn’t know what to write and what to leave out. So, just before you start writing, make sure that you have all the important points in your head.

You can’t include everything you know so cut out the flab by removing points that are not that relevant. Writing practice should inculcate this sense of what is more important and what could be left out. While writing, never go overboard and make sure your points are backed by strong logic and fact so that they do not just hang in the vacuum.

Nine months at IIMC is a lifetime in itself. Hope you get to be a part of IIMC. Be relaxed and confident about your own abilities and preparations.

Knowledge is more important than preparation

I am Ankur Ogra, I passed out of the institute in 2006. I was awarded the Achin Ganguly memorial scholarship for topping the entrance examination. I have worked in various advertising agencies like Dentsu, Ogilvy & Mather, Draft FCB Ulka and I am currently working with Percept Hakuhodo as Senior Manager –strategy. I have worked on various brands like American Express, Hutch/Vodafone, Tata Docomo, Oswal among others. I was also doing theatre during my days at the institute with Barry John and acted in some plays with him.

Preparing for the advertising & PR entrance exam is the easiest the challenge I have faced in my life. Unbelievable...yes but true!

Because there was absolutely no preparation I had done for it. This is an exam that tests your knowledge of current socio-political matters affecting society and the relevance and importance of branding, advertising, marketing and other business issues affecting our everyday life.

Hence, preparation at the last minute would not be of great help, so anyone who has been reading economic and political newspapers and magazines will have a far greater edge than someone who has picked it up in the last few weeks.

Tips to crack the entrance examination for Advertising & PR

My suggestions– brand equity on ET (Wednesdays), Storyboard (CNBC), All about ads (NDTV Profit). Just follow these articles and programmes religiously till the time of the exam and I am sure it would be of great help.

The questions are subjective and you have 2 hours to finish. So you need to be fast in answering. Very fast! Since the competition is tough please don’t leave any question.

There is a group discussion after you have been shortlisted on the basis of your written examination for 15 marks. But this exam is not independent of your written exam, so even if you screw up your GD, you still have a good chance of cracking the exam!...so in a nutshell the entrance exam is of paramount importance. The total score is calculated from 100 marks.

Finally, just be calm and composed and am sure you will crack it.

Read newspapers and keep yourself updated

To be honest and when I write this do not take me to be a pretentious snob, but getting through the English Journalism entrance is not a rocket science. I may sound a little ambitious but if I am asked how to crack IIMC entrance examinations, I have a simple answer- all you need to do is keep yourself updated with all you can. Sounds a little hard? It may at first but when you actually start thinking about it you might realise that reading a newspaper thoroughly for two to three hours daily is enough. It should be in your habit to read a newspaper on a daily basis. Your day should be incomplete unless you have read a newspaper.

Search for everything that has been in news in the last one year globally. You should be having a thorough understanding of what are all the burning issues. The issues can range from politics, economics to sports, movies et al. (whether national or international).

If possible try writing some essays on the issues that were in news recently and by news I mean major events. Every major English daily has a presence on web where you can find all the news to satiate your thirst. Read whatever you can about current issues you come across. Make it a habit of reading the newspaper editorial section.

Now how to answer questions. Generally, you get one statement on a current topic and are asked to give your viewpoints or do a critical analysis of the given problem. Of course there is a word limit for that ranging between 150-200 words. The examiners are not only checking your understanding of the issue and writing skills they are also looking at your own viewpoint on different issues. It is important to have a stand on issues. For example Jan Lok Pal Bill. You might be asked your viewpoint on it or to critically analyse whether India needs a law like this or not. You may also be also be asked about whether Anna Hazare's method of protest was right or wrong. This is just an example of the types that can be asked.

You should be ready to answer such questions with adequate reasons and facts backing your argument. Try giving both sides of an issue and then justifying one over other. Keep your sentences simple and short. Try not to beat around the bush. Avoid repetation.

Important thing to remeber is try not to cross word limit. You can end your essays short but try not to cross the limit. How effectively you can express yourself within prescribed limit is also a test. Give only relevant arguments i.e. only those which are related to the question asked.

Another question asked where there is a potential of scoring is where you are asked to write two-three sentences on various topics ranging from personalities to issues and organisations in news. If you are following the current events this one should not be a problem.

I must admit that I felt myself to be lucky to get through this test considering the fact that being the premier institute for Journalism it is an achievement in itself to get through its entrance examination. Again i would say read, read and read whatever you can on current topics and issues in news in the last few months. The more you read the better your understanding on issues will be and easier it will be to answer the questions. Become a “news junkie”!

To be succesfull in this field you should have a passion for writing and news. Best of luck for the exams.

सौरभ द्विवेदी 2006-07 बैच के टॉपर रहे हैं. स्टार न्यूज में इन्टर्न के तौर पर पारी की शुरुआत. लाइव इंडिया और नवभारत टाइम्स के साथ खुद को निखारते हुए फिलहाल चंडीगढ़ में दैनिक भास्कर के समाचार संपादक. सिटी लाइफ और एजुकेशन भास्कर की टीम का नेतृत्व सौरभ के कंधे पर है.

छी, पत्रकारिता भी भला कोई धंधा है, प्रोफेशन कहते तो भी काम चल जाता। और हम तो इसे प्रोफेशन भी नहीं मानते। दुनिया की तस्वीर बदलने का एक औजार है ये।

तो चलिए पहले आप यही तय कर लीजिए कि आप ये एंट्रेंस एग्जाम क्यों दे रहे हैं। पत्रकार बनना है, क्यों, क्योंकि ग्रेजुएशन के बाद कुछ करना है, क्योंकि टीवी पर जब सूटबूट में बाबू जी किसी लड़के को देखते हैं, तो मुझे लगता है कि उन्हें मुझे देखना चाहिए। कि जब टीवी पर लहराते दुपट्टे के आगे कोई मुस्कराता चेहरा पूरे यकीन के साथ दिल्ली के गलियारों से, मुंबई की सड़कों से रिपोर्टिंग कर रहा होता है, तो मुझे लगता है कि ये लड़की मैं हूं। क्योंकि मीडिया में वो सब कुछ है जो हिंदुस्तान और खासतौर पर हिंदी पट्टी में किसी को चाहिए होता है – पावर, ग्लैमर और अगर ढंग से जम गए तो मनी भी।

आखिर ये कैसा आईआईएमसी पासआउट है, जो एंट्रेंस के बारीक पेच बताने के बजाय फालतू लंतरानी हांके जा रहा है। दरअसल मेरे पास बताने को और कुछ है भी नहीं। जो है वो कुछ इसी तरह की बेतरतीबी से सामने आएगा।

पहला और सबसे जरूरी सवाल

इस धंधे में क्यों आ रहे हो

ये सवाल वैसे तो इंटरव्यू में पूछा जाता है, मगर आपके जेहन में पहले से ही क्लीयर होना चाहिए। हो सकता है कि कोर्स पूरा करने के बाद तुम्हें फौरन प्लेसमेंट न मिले। हो सकता है कि तुम्हें लगे कि क्लासरूम में जो अच्छी बातें बताई जा रही हैं वो इंडस्ट्री में काम नहीं आ रहीं। हो सकता है कि कभी तुम्हें लगे कि मेरे बगल में बैड़ा कलीग, या मेरा बॉस मुझसे कम जानता है, मगर फिर भी मुझे उसके निर्देश तले काम करना होगा। हो सकता है कि जिस तरीके से दसेक साल पहले तक सिर्फ नेताओं को गालियां पड़ती थीं, उसी तरफ से तुम्हें भी उस कॉमन नाउन मीडिया का हिस्सा होने के कारण कुल्ला भरकर गालियां पड़ें।

तो फिर क्यों, आखिर क्या है। पइसा बोल नहीं सकते, क्योंकि ये सब जानते हैं कि हिंदी मीडिया में पइसा ठीक ठाक तो है, मगर इफरात में नहीं।

देशसेवा के लिए आ रहे हो, ये सोचते भी हो, तो भी मत बोलना, क्योंकि एग्जाम और इंटरव्यू में मजाक अच्छे नहीं माने जाते। पता नहीं सामने वाले का सेंस ऑफ ह्यूमर तुम्हारे मार्क्स पर हथौड़ा न मार दे।

तो फिर क्या जवाब दिया जाए। अगर यही सवाल मुझसे पूछा जाए तो, मैं इस धंधे में इसलिए आया क्योंकि यहां मजा आता है। हर दिन नया दिन, नई खबर, सब कुछ रफ्तार, एकुरेसी और क्रिएटिविटी की मांग करता, यहां डेली ट्वेंटी-टवेंटी की तरह कुछ दर्शनीय शॉट मारने हैं, यहां डेली रनरेट बेहतर करना है, यहां डेली क्लास डिवेलप करनी है।

पत्रकारिता सिर्फ नौ से पांच की नौकरी नहीं। तुम सड़क पर चल रहे हो, खाना खा रहे हो, मां को टीवी देखते देख रहे हो, सब्जी वाले को समझा रहे हो, या फिर कुछ नहीं तो सिर्फ बच्चे को टब से पानी गिराते देख रहे हो, तो तुम पत्रकार होने के नाते कुछ ऑब्जर्व कर रहे हो। तुम पूरे के पूरे ऐसे बन जाते हो, जैसे कभी तुम एक आदमी नहीं सिर्फ एक बड़ा सा कान हो, जो दुनिया की बारीक से बारीक आवाज को इतने शोर के बीच साफ सुन लेना चाहता है, तुम कभी सिर्फ नाक बन जाते हो, ताकि इतने धूल के बीच तुम सीधी सच्ची ऑक्सीजन खींच सको। तुम सिर्फ एक बड़ी बहुत बड़ी आंख बनना चाहते हो, जिससे कुछ भी कितनी भी बारीक सिम्तों में लिपटा हुआ सच छिपा न रह जाए।

हम इस धंधे में आना चाहते हैं क्योंकि जब बड़ी खबर आती है, तो एड्रेनिल रश तेज हो जाता है, क्योंकि जब पेज की डिजाइन का काम आता है, तो हमारा पिकासो किलकारियां मारने लगता है। हम इस धंधे में आना चाहते हैं क्योंकि हम चाहते हैं कि ये देश अपने दिन की शुरुआत हमारे लिखे-संवारे हुए कंटेंट से करे। हम इस देश की नाक, आंख, कान बनना चाहते हैं।

ऑलराइट तो इस लंबे स्पीचनुमा मोनोलॉग के बाद वक्त है कुछ जरूरी सलाहों का, नहीं ऊपर वाली भी सब जरूरी हैं, मगर कुछ तथ्यात्मक ज्ञान का

पाइंट्स में लिखता हूं ताकि रट्टा मारने में आसानी रहे।

- पत्रकार को सेक्स से लेकर सेटेलाइट तक हर चीज की बेसिक समझ होनी चाहिए।

- एग्जाम देना रॉकेट साइंस नहीं है। कॉपी मिलते ही एक सरकारी एलियन में तब्दील मत हो जाना। ये नहीं कि पेन पकड़ते ही जिस भाषा में बात करते हो, जिन जुमलों को इस्तेमाल करते हो उन्हें भूलकर, अखबारी या प्रतियोगिता दर्पण स्टाइल की इबारत लिखना शुरू कर दो। भाषा वैसी ही होनी चाहिए जैसी डेली बोलते हो, फ्लो हो, कृत्रिमता नहीं।

- ढाई घंटे का पेपर है, छोटे-छोटे सवाल शर्तिया फायदा देते हैं, इसलिए उन्हें पहले निपटा लो।

- क्योंकि बडे सवाल में बहुत अच्छा लिखोगे तो 15 में 12 मिल जाएंगे, एवरेज लिखोगे तो 8 मिल जाएंगे, मगर 5-5 नंबर के तीन सवाल भी गए, तो 15 नंबरों की भ्रूण हत्या हो जाएगी।

- जवाब में तथ्य सही लिखो और हां जवाब लिखने के दौरान अपने आसपास के सहज सरज उदाहरण लिखो, इससे एग्जाम्नर को भी समझ आता है कि कॉपी लिखने वाली फूल देवी, या भोले भंडारी नहीं हैं। मसलन, अगर सांप्रदायिकता पर लिख रहे हो, तो अपने शहर के बजरिया इलाके की छवि पर लिख सकते हो, माई नेम इज खान के शाहरुख के किसी डायलॉग के बारे में लिख सकते हो, या फिर क्रिकेट मैच के बाद के किसी स्टेटमेंट के बारे में भी। किस्सा कोताह ये कि जब सवाल देखो, तो उनके जवाब किताबी निबंधों में नहीं अपने आसपास खोजो। अपनी जिंदगी से जवाब उठाओगे, तो रट्टा मारने की जरूरत नहीं पड़ेगी, भाषा कम नहीं पड़ेगी।

- बाकी बातें अगली किस्त में, मगर वो तभी, जब आपको ये काम का लगे, वर्ना क्यों समय खराब करना, आपका और अपना भी।

- ऑल द बेस्ट, वो रोडीज वाले कहते हैं न. वेलकम इन हेल.

Essential for you to absorb different viewpoints

If I want some quick and really passionate answers from all you aspiring journalists, I should simply ask 'what do you think of the ‘India against Corruption’ campaign?' All of you I am sure will give some really long views, comments and all of them would be full of passion. But now let me ask you all a different question. How do you think the Lokpal Bill is going to help the fight against corruption? Or do you think that the Jan Lokpal bill is a threat to the constitution and the vision of its writers. Oh and please give me an answer in about 500 words, if you would.

Okay so what I am trying to achieve here is not to tell you that these two questions are going to come this year. No one knows what will come. But I am trying to tell you the different aspects to the same issue. In short I am trying to tell you how to look at different issues so as to ensure that you answer them well.

I was just reading my blog for the entrance test last year and I realised that it still holds. So all of you, please read it before you go ahead with this one.

Time to sip a cola & become a couch potato

Now that you have read it and have realised that IIMC entrance tests look at nothing but your general awareness and your ability to express your views lets go back to how I began.

All I asking you to do is to know the different sides of the same story. Generally the RTV question papers puts out a sentence and ask you to discuss or comment. And generally the word limit is small like 200 or 500 at the most.

Now given that you have such a small limit, you have to plan your answer well. In a discussion or a comment question it is necessary to have an introduction where you introduce your thought process to the examiner. Then there comes the body where you present the meat of your arguments and last comes the conclusion.

In this kind of a scenario be sure that you cover as many points as possible but in no case should you leave a point not explained. That is to say if you have picked up three main points in the body then explain them well rather than picking up 5 points and not explaining them at all. Keep them short and to the point and no need for repetition at all. Remember the examiner is looking at your ability to express your awareness. In ‘discuss or comment’ question always touch the pros and cons of a topic. In the ‘India against Corruption’ issue you should be aware of the criticism of the so called movement as well, regardless of where you stand on the topic.

In the 2010 question paper the first question is asking you to critically analyse the media coverage of some issues. These kind of questions are very common for the entrance exam. You can’t fluff on these. You have either watched the coverage or you have not. So one big advice, if you have not already started doing it, watch all the main news channels starting now. To form opinions with a strong foundation you should be reading all the opinions and editorial being written across newspapers, magazines etc. It is essential for you to absorb different viewpoints.

When you critically analyse something the examiner is asking you to look at a situation and say what you feel. In this case you have to mention what you liked or disliked about the coverage of issues. Again in the intro mention your main stand on what you felt about the coverage, was it balanced, was it sensationalist, was it subdued. Then explain why you feel so, give examples to back your analysis.

Remember it’s not a difficult exam, all you need to do is to sit back, watch tv, read news and be aware of all that happened in the last year. Be sure to read about all people, events, and controversies in the news in the last year. 2G, Commonwealth Games, India’s World Cup win, India against Corruption campaign, Adarsh society scam and the recent events in the Middle East come to my mind in less than a minute. But then if you are a true aspiring journalist and are a news junkie you already will know what I am talking about.

Intrigued by the world of “Brands”, Ramina has been setting the strategic objectives of the brand in the media and communication platforms. She has worked in some relevant Brands like Mother Dairy, GSK (GlaxoSmithKline) products, Uninor, Future-Groups and currently working in Dabur.

The IIMC Entrance exam was really one of the best written exams I have given in my life because I was writing everything what I was watching and reading every day. On the exam day, I was smiling and writing about my favorite novel “Erich Sehgal’s Love Story “and was narrating how a lead female character in the daily Soap inspired me. It was fun...

No Doubt, Cracking Ad& PR Exam of IIMC is not rocket science project but you still can’t ignore it. It involves lots of reading (newspaper, Mag, Fiction and Non Fiction Books), watching TV (From news channel to GEC to niche channels), listening to radio and of course internet (now in this scenario).
*GEC channels: Star Plus, Colors, and ZEE TV etc...
*Niche channels: Discovery, TLC, NDTV Good times etc...)

Luckily I was preparing for MBA entrance exam so for me no new additional preparation was needed for IIMC. I was reading 3 Dailies (Hindu, HT, TOI), Business Mag ( Business world, Business Today), News Channel, Business Channels (NDTV Profit and CNBC TV 18) and yah radio was for music when I get bored but it really helped ‘cos there was a question on “Describe an ad you like most in radio, and ad script for radio?”

So anything and everything can be useful when you know how to use and portray it.(And of course you can’t ignore all the print ads, TV ads ,Internet ads, radio ads ,outdoor ads ..Welcome to the world of advertising)

Bottom-line: Keep yourself updated (through any mediums- TV, Print, Radio, and Internet) in Socio-economic Related topics, Politics, IT, Entertainment, Current scenario etc... And express your thoughts in simple and creative way.

Suggestion:
Newspapers: HT/TOI/Hindu (Read all the editorials, and especially HT Sunday – I used to love Face off by Vir Sanghvi and Sunday sentiments by Karan ThaparJ) And don’t forget to see ads on First Page right hand side, 3rd page, Back page. Observe the Brands and build your opinion or how the ads can be more interesting be if you have to recreate the ads. It works.

Magazines: Business World/Outlook Business/ Business Today (Case study and In Depth Sections in Business World is really useful)

TV: Watch Soaps, Documentary, Non Fictions (Don’t forget to notice ads in between the breaks and tagline and proposition of the Brands)

Books: Fiction/ Non Fiction (Better to start an exercise of writing a 1page summary of what actually you feel and your thoughts, opinions after reading a book .It helps)

भारतीय जन संचार संस्थान में प्रवेश के इच्छुक छात्रों को परीक्षा के लगभग एक महीना पहले से इसके प्रति गंभीर हो जाना चाहिए. मेरे अनुसार सबसे पहले अभ्यर्थियों को विगत वर्षों के प्रश्नों का बारीक अध्ययन करना चाहिएय अगर आखिरी दिनों तक इसका नियमित अध्ययन कर तैयारी की जाए तो बेहतर होगा. साथ ही अभ्यर्थियों को इन दिनों दो-तीन स्तरीय अखबार भी पढ़ना चाहिए. हिन्दी के छात्रों को अगर संभव हो सके तो ‘जनसत्ता’ पढ़ना चाहिए. जनसत्ता में संपादकीय पेज स्तरीय होता है. इसमें ‘दुनिया मेरे आगे’ नामक कॉलम से काफी कुछ सीखा जा सकता है, लेकिन यह अनिवार्य नहीं है.

इन दिनों में छात्रों को पढ़ने और लिखने का ज्यादा से ज्यादा अभ्यास करना चाहिए. किसी भी विषय पर पढ़ने से ज्यादा लिखना और लिखने से ज्यादा उस विषय पर मंथन करना चाहिए. इससे परीक्षा में किसी मुद्दे को किसी भी प्रकार से पूछे जाने पर बेहतर ढ़ंग से लिखा जा सकता है. अभ्यर्थियों को समसामयिक मुद्दों के साथ-साथ अपने बारे में, अपने से जुड़े अनुभवों के बारे में, अपने राज्य के बारे में, अपने शहर के बारे में, अपने प्रिय अखबार, अपने प्रिय रिपोर्टर, पत्रकारिता में आने के कारण जैसे सवालों पर भी अध्ययन और विचार करना चाहिए.

हिन्दी पत्रकारिता के छात्रों को अनुवाद का भी ज्ञान होना चाहिए. प्रत्येक दिन कम से कम दो अंग्रेजी समाचार के अनुवाद का अभ्यास करना चाहिए. परीक्षा में बेहतर परिणाम के लिए इसमें निरंतरता आवश्यक है. प्रवेश परीक्षा में कई बार मीडिया से जुड़े सवाल भी पूछे जाते है जैसे टीआरपी, बाजार का मीडिया संस्थानों पर बढ़ता दबाव, पेड न्यूज़, खबरों का बदलता स्वरूप, खबरों की बदलती प्राथमिकता. इसके बारे में विभिन्न पत्रिकाओं के मीडिया विशेषांक और अखबारों में मीडिया से जुड़े लेखों से समझ बढ़ाई जा सकती है.

Indian Institute of Mass communication, a fun run of nine months, put in your best and you can have the best time of your life during the period. The only thing the institute and the profession demands from you is being calm and positive, apart from the other traits of a worldly wise person.

First of all be sure about what you are going to enter into, and don’t think I am dissuading you from entering into this parallel world of “news”. Yes it’s a parallel world. Once you are sure that it’s your passion and not just another job, things will be quite easy for you.First things first, A general know how, awareness, from what’s happening in your vicinity to the reasons of the IPL Gate to the Volcanic eruption which stalled the air traffic and passengers in several parts of the world. That’s not a big task, only one newspaper read everyday religiously can do the needful.

Secondly, one should have writing skills through which he/she could express/communicate with the audiences in as few words as he/she can.

The written exam is a test of your general abilities, presence of mind and a test of how you express things & analyze them. Although the pattern of the question paper keeps changing, but the overall focus is the same.

There would be some questions where you would be asked to write short notes, questions can range from the IPL Row, Sania–Shoaib Marriage vis-à-vis media coverage, the Naxal menace, US in Afghanistan, Paid News, Nithyanand Sex Scandal, the new breed of politicians, Indo-Pak relations, 3 G Spectrum etc. Here you would be tested for your knowledge and writing skills. I would suggest you to be straight, be fair in your analysis and don’t put in your own views too much, a critical analysis – both sides of the story would be the best effort from you.

Then there can be a match the following or one liners for some personalities. A basic knowledge of some personalities in news would be required; here you can score the most, try to solve them at the start, with a fresh mind.

Give at least two days before the paper to get to know the Indian media personalities: From the Editors of the prominent news channels, to some of the prominent columnists/journalists.As far as I remember the major weightage in the entrance is given to the written part, so be geared up to score the most, that will make things easy for you in the GD/PI.

Once you are through the written you will have to appear in the Group Discussion and Personal Interview. Confidence plays the biggest role here, but don’t be overconfident. Be original, what you are. Speak only when you are confident, you have answers to the questions branching out of what you going to speak. But that doesn't mean that you keep silent, try to turn the discussion/interview, mold it your way, that’s where you score, make others speak what you want them to. That is what a journalist all about. Speaking is not the only thing in journalism, it’s only a part, making people speak is the trait of a winner here. I will be through should be the attitude, help yourself and you will be through.

There is no rocket science required for doing this course. I will accept that it is one of the most sophisticated & compact programme for Advertising & Public Relations I have seen in most of the academics charts of most of the universities across the globe. It’s been 5 years now, I have completed my course and now I feel that there was nothing special which we need to prepare on for the course. Well, in my case I was preparing for CAT and unfortunately I could not make it to final list of any IIM’s but just thought of appearing for this course as I have zeal of doing something new and innovative. Someone who is very sharp observer, dreamer & with stupid ideas can make for the course. This course is well defined structure of communication. The most important aspect is that how do we connect it to our daily life, get insights and try to replicate in the strategy for our brand, product, company, person etc etc. A person who is a good reader, now day’s good web surfer and has capability to think little out of the box can go for it. I must give a thrust on the fact that you should be able to think & write.

I don’t need to go for the topics or papers covered in the course as all of you know if you have read and observed the brochure. Now, how to crack the exam? It is the million dollar question…

Try to put your ideas on paper with appropriate examples. Read case studies from business magazines, try to use simple but expressive language. संदीप कुमार आईआईएमसी की हिन्दी पत्रकारिता के छात्र रहे हैं. 2005-06 बैच के टॉपर संदीप दिल्ली पहुंचने से पहले प्रभात खबर के साथ काम कर चुके थे. पहला ब्रेक स्टार न्यूज में. फिलहाल आजतक में.

2005 के वो दिन याद आते हैं जब मुझे आईआईएमसी के एंट्रेस देने थे। दिल्ली से हजारों किलोमीटर दूर झारखंड के मेरे छोटे से कस्बे में आईआईएमसी का नाम किसी ने शायद ही सुना था। मुझे भी झटके में आईआईएमसी के बारे में जानकारी मिली थी और फिर पता भी नहीं चला कि कैसे झटके में ही यहां पहुंच गया। कोई प्रोपर तरीके से तैयारी नहीं की थी क्योंकि एंट्रेस पेपर का कोई फॉर्मेट-फॉर्मूला मुझे पता ही नहीं था। बस अखबारों-पत्रिकाओं से पुराना नाता था, उसे बरकरार रखा और लिखने-पढ़ने का क्रम जारी रखा। यहां ये सब बताने का मकसद सिर्फ इतना है कि आईआईएमसी पहुंचना कोई बहुत बड़ी बात नहीं। बस थोड़ा अलर्ट रहने की जरूरत होती है। खबरों की दुनिया से वास्ता रखना होता है।

पिछले कुछ सालों के आईआईएमसी के जर्नलिज्म के एंट्रेस पेपर का कंटेंट एनालिसिस किया जाए तो एक फॉर्मेट समझ में आता है। जरूरी नहीं कि ये कोई यूनिवर्सल फॉर्मेट ही हो लेकिन इसपर एक नजर मार लिया जाए तो बहुत घाटे का सौदा नहीं रहेगा। पिछले सालों के पेपर के कंटेंट एनालिसिस के आधार पर हम जर्नलिज्म के पेपर को चार भागों में बांट सकते हैं।

करेंट अफेयर्स
आईआईएमसी का इम्तिहान पत्रकारिता प्रशिक्षण के लिए होता है इसलिए हर परीक्षार्थी से ये उम्मीद की जाती है कि वो देश-दुनिया में हो रही घटनाओं-परिघटनाओं से परिचित हो। एंट्रेस पेपर का एक बड़ा हिस्सा करेंट अफेयर्स से ही जुड़ा होता है। अगर हम करेंट अफेयर्स के हिस्से को थोड़ा और विस्तार से देखें तो इसके भी कुछ उपभाग हो सकते हैं।

शॉर्ट क्वेश्चन
देखा जाता है कि कुछेक हस्तियों, घटनाओं, जगहों का नाम देकर पूछा जाता है कि आखिर ये सुर्खियों में क्यों थे। ऐसे करीबन 10 सवाल पूछे जाते हैं। दो-दो नंबर के जिन्हें 25-30 शब्दों में लिखना होता है। जाहिर तौर पर इसे अच्छी तरह से लिखने के लिए जरूरी है कि आप हर खबर, हर घटना और हर चर्चित शख्सियत के बारे में अपडेट रहें। यहां आपको विस्तार से चीजें नहीं बतानी होतीं बल्कि कम शब्दों में ज्यादा बेहतर बताना होता है इसलिए यहां लफ्फाजी नहीं चलेगी। सीधे-सीधे टू-द-प्वाइंट जवाब देना होगा। और अगर आपने सभी 10 सवाल कर लिए और बेहतर तरीके से कर लिए तो यकीन जानिए कि आप अच्छे मार्क्स इस सेगमेंट में ला सकते हैं।

राष्ट्रीय मुद्दे
करेंट अफेयर्स पार्ट में ये भी एक बड़ा मसला है। देशभर की बड़ी गतिविधियों पर सवाल होते हैं और ये ज्यादा मार्क्स के लिए होते हैं। इनके जवाब आपको 400-500 शब्दों में भी देने होते हैं। इन दिनों नेशनल इश्यू में आप देखें तो महिला आरक्षण बिल, नक्सलवाद की समस्या, राइट टू एडुकेशन जैसे अहम मुद्दे सामने आ रहे हैं। आपसे इन मुद्दों के बारे में पूछा जा सकता है। सवाल सीधे-सीधे भी हो सकते हैं या घुमा-फिराकर भी पूछा जा सकता है। आपके विचार जाने जा सकते हैं या फिर किसी मसले के पक्ष-विपक्ष या फिर दोनों पहलुओं के बारे में पूछा जा सकता है।

राजनीतिक मुद्दे
राजनीतिक मुद्दों पर भी अहम होते हैं और इसपर भी पूछा जा सकता है। राजनीति का अपराधीकरण और अपराध का राजनीतिकरण से लेकर तात्कालिक राजनीतिक मुद्दों पर भी सवाल हो सकते हैं। अगर हालिया घटनाक्रम पर नजर डालें तो बीजेपी में नेतृत्व परिवर्तन से लेकर ‘क्रिकेट पॉलिटिक्स’ तक पर जानकारी मांगी जा सकती है।

अंतरराष्ट्रीय मुद्दे
आईआईएमसी के इम्तिहान में जितना जोर राष्ट्रीय मुद्दों पर होता है उतना ही अंतरराष्ट्रीय मसले भी अहम होते हैं। दुनिया में घटने वाली बड़ी-बड़ी परिघटनाओं से लेकर दो देशों के बीच संबंधों को लेकर भी सवाल हो सकते हैं। ज्यादा जोर भारत और पड़ोसी देशों और एशियाई मुल्कों की स्थितियों-परिस्थितियों पर भी होता है। भारत-अमेरिका संबंधों से लेकर अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर के सम्मेलनों-बैठकों पर भी सवाल पूछे जाते हैं।

मीडिया-विमर्श
आप देश के शीर्ष मीडिया संस्थान में दाखिला लेना चाह रहे हैं और मीडिया के क्षेत्र में अपना भविष्य बनाने जा रहे हैं इसलिए लाजिमी है कि मीडिया से संबंधित हलचलों से आप रू-ब-रू रहें। हर साल मीडिया से जुड़े कुछ-ना-कुछ सवाल होते हैं जिसके मार्फत आपकी मीडिया से संबंधित समझ को परखने की कोशिश की जाती है। इन दिनों ‘पेड न्यूज’ की खूब चर्चा है सो इसी तरह से मीडिया से जुड़े मुद्दों पर आपकी राय जानी जा सकती है। इसलिए मीडिया गतिविधियों पर नजर रखें।

पारंपरिक-क्रिएटिव
पत्रकारिता एक तरह से लिखने का धंधा है। आप कैसा लिखते हैं ये भी एंट्रेंस में जानने की कोशिश की जाती है। ऐसे सवाल हल्के नजर आते हैं लेकिन इसे हल्के में नहीं लेना चाहिए। भाषा, सोच-समझ सबका दर्पण होता है ये सेक्शन। जैसे आपसे पूछा जा सकता है कि आपने जर्नलिज्म फील्ड ही क्यों चुना? आपसे आपके पसंदीदा समाचार-पत्र, चैनल, टीवी शो के बारे में भी पूछा जा सकता है। कई बार आपसे आपके संस्मरण भी पूछे जाते हैं मसलन ट्रेन यात्रा, किसी हादसे का आंखों देखा हाल। ऐसे सवालों को लिखने के लिए जरूरी है कि आप लगातार घर में प्रैक्टिस करें। कुछ-ना-कुछ लिखते रहें। कम-से-कम दिनभर की डायरी ही सही।

अनुवाद-संक्षेपण
हाल-फिलहाल से ये अंतिम भाग के तौर पर जर्नलिज्म के पेपर में पूछा जाता है। एक पैसेज देकर या तो उसका हिन्दी में अनुवाद करना होता है या फिर अंग्रेजी में उसका संक्षेपण करना होता है। ये करीब 20 मार्क्स का होता है इसलिए इसकी उपेक्षा करना खतरे से खाली नहीं। इस पार्ट को बेहतर तरीके से डील करने के लिए लगातार अभ्यास की जरूरत है। इसलिए अंग्रेजी अखबार को लेकर हर रोज अनुवाद करने की प्रैक्टिस करें। इससे मीडिया की शब्दावली से आप परिचित भी होते चले जाएंगे और पेपर देते वक्त आसानी होगी। चूंकि पैसेज बड़ा होता है और उसे कम करके लिखना होता है इसलिए जरूरी है कि उसे दो-तीन बार पढ़कर ये तय कर लें कि किस भाग को लेना है और किस भाग को छोड़ना है। सीधे-सीधे शब्दों के अनुवाद की जरूरत नहीं होती है बल्कि भाव-अनुवाद पर जोर देना चाहिए। मार्क्स के हिसाब से चूंकि ये सेक्शन बेहद अहम है इसलिए इसे आखिरी में हल करने की भी कोशिश नहीं करनी चाहिए क्योंकि आखिरी में आपके पास वक्त कम होता है और आप हड़बड़ी में गड़बड़ी भी कर सकते हैं।

यहां एक बात ये जरूर कहना चाहिए कि आईआईएमसी का एंट्रेंस पास करने के लिए जितना जरूरी पढ़ना है उससे कहीं ज्यादा जरूरी लिखना है। केवल दो घंटे के इम्तिहान में आपको पच्चीसियों सवाल के जवाब लिखने होते हैं इसलिए आप गांठ बांध लें कि जितना पढ़ेंगे उससे कहीं ज्यादा लिखेंगे।

ऐसा किया तो फिर रोकेगा कौन?

तनाव को खुद पर हावी न होने दें

हिमांशु शेखर 2008-09 सत्र में हिन्दी पत्रकारिता के छात्र रहे. अलग-अलग पत्र-पत्रिकाओं में 300 से ज्यादा प्रकाशित लेखों की पूंजी के साथ आईआईएमसी पहुंचे. यहां से निकलने के बाद बिजनेस भास्कर के रास्ते फिलहाल बिजनेस स्टैंडर्ड में.

आईआईएमसी प्रवेश परीक्षा में सफल होने के लिए सबसे पहले तो यह जरूरी है कि इस संस्थान में दाखिले की प्रक्रिया को लेकर जितने भी वहम अपने मन में आपने पाल रखे हैं, उन सभी को दिमाग से बाहर निकाल दें और इस पूरी प्रक्रिया के भय को त्याग दें.

आपको बहुत सारे लोग यह कहते हुए मिल जाएंगे कि इस संस्थान में दाखिला पाना तो असंभव सरीखा है और अगर दाखिला चाहते हो तो फलां जगह कोचिंग ले लो या फिर फलां-फलां मोटी किताबें पढ़ लो.

पर अपने अनुभव को आपके संग साझा करते हुए मैं तो यही कहूंगा कि इन बातों में आने की कोई जरूरत नहीं है. आप फॉर्म भरने या जमा करने जब आईआईएमसी गए होंगे तो वहां तैयारी करवाने वाले कुछ कोचिंग संस्थान वाले आपको जरूर मिले होंगे. कुछ पर्चियां भी दी होंगी. जिसमें कुछ छात्रों की तस्वीर भी होगी. दावा किया गया होगा कि इनका दाखिला संबंधित कोचिंग संस्थान की सेवा लेने की वजह से ही हुआ.

पर यकीन जानिए ये खोखली बाते हैं. ये कोचिंग संस्थान आईआईएमसी के छात्रों की सहमति से और ज्यादातर मामलों में छात्रों की सहमति लिए बगैर उनकी तस्वीर का इस्तेमाल करते हैं. इसलिए पहली बात तो यह कि दाखिले की गारंटी देने वाले इन कोचिंग संस्थान की जाल में न फंसे.

आईआईएमसी की प्रवेश परीक्षा में आपकी सामान्य जानकारी और समझ को परखने की कोशिश होती है. जानकारी और विद्वता में फर्क होता है. आईआईएमसी की यह अपेक्षा नहीं रहती है कि वहां जो आए वह विद्वान हो लेकिन इतनी अपेक्षा जरूर होती है कि जो वहां आए वह समझदार हो. वह अपने देश-विदेश और समाज में चलने वाली गतिविधियों और हो रहे बदलाव के साथ इतिहास से भी वाकिफ हो. पत्रकार बनने की इच्छा रखने वालों से सामान्य अपेक्षा यह भी रहती है कि उसे सामाजिक, राजनीतिक और आर्थिक स्थितियों की समझ हो.

पिछले कुछ साल से यह देखा जा रहा है कि आईआईएमसी प्रवेश परीक्षा में अर्थ जगत से जुड़े सवालों की संख्या बढ़ी है. इसलिए आर्थिक क्षेत्र की बुनियादी जानकारी और इस क्षेत्र की प्रमुख घटनाओं की जानकारी होना बेहद जरूरी है. साथ ही अपनी बात को शब्दों के जरिए सही और प्रभावी तरीके से अभिव्यक्त करने की क्षमता होना भी पत्रकार बनने की इच्छा रखने वालों के लिए एक अनिवार्य शर्त है.

इन बातों को ध्यान में रखकर तैयारी करने के बाद इस बात की संभावना नहीं रहती कि आप प्रवेश परीक्षा में अच्छा प्रदर्शन नहीं करें. तैयारी की पूरी प्रक्रिया में कभी भी तनाव को खुद पर हावी नहीं होने दें. अखबार नियमित तौर पर पढ़ें. अगर आप हिंदी पत्रकारिता में दाखिले के लिए आवेदन कर रहे हैं तो इसका मतलब यह नहीं है कि आप सिर्फ हिंदी अखबार ही पढ़ें. बल्कि अंग्रेजी के अच्छे अखबार भी पढ़ें. इसके अलावा विभिन्न पत्र-पत्रिकाओं का अध्ययन करना भी जरूरी है. इस पूरी प्रक्रिया में किसी घटना से जुड़ी खबर आप पढ़ते हैं तो उससे जुड़े तमाम पहलुओं को आप जानने की कोशिश करें. इसमें इंटरनेट आपके लिए उपयोगी हो सकता है.

उदाहरण के तौर पर अभी शिक्षा का अधिकार कानून लागू हो गया. इस खबर की जानकारी रखना सिर्फ पर्याप्त नहीं है. बल्कि यह जानने की कोशिश करें कि इस कानून पर बातचीत कब शुरू हुई. इस पूरी प्रक्रिया में कितना समय लगा और क्या उतार-चढ़ाव आए. दुनिया के और किन देशों में ऐसा कानून है. इस कानून को अमली रूप देने की सरकार ने क्या व्यवस्था की है. जो इसका विरोध कर रहे हैं उनके पास क्या तर्क हैं. इतनी जानकारी जुटा लेने के बाद आपकी एक समझ बनेगी और तब आप इसके बारे में बेहतर तरीके से कुछ कह पाएंगे. ऐसे में जो आप कहेंगे वह तथ्यपरक और प्रभावी होगा. यही प्रक्रिया हर अहम मसले के साथ अपनाना चाहिए. खुद के अंदर किसी मसले को गहराई से जानने-समझने की ललक पैदा करना बेहद जरूरी है.

इस प्रक्रिया के तहत जब आप पत्र-पत्रिकाओं का अध्ययन करेंगे तो आपकी जानकारी और समझ तो बढ़ेगी ही साथ ही साथ आपका आत्मविश्वास भी बढ़ेगा. इसका लाभ उस समय स्पष्ट तौर पर देखने को मिलेगा जब आप प्रवेश परीक्षा में बैठेंगे.

हालांकि, आईआईएमसी प्रवेश परीक्षा में पूछे जाने वाले सवालों का कोई एक निश्चित पैटर्न नहीं रहता है लेकिन इसके बावजूद पुराने प्रश्न पत्रों पर निगाह मार लेना बेहद जरूरी है. इससे यह पता चलता है कि सवाल किस-किस क्षेत्र से संबंधित होते हैं. प्रवेश परीक्षा में पूछे जाने वाले सवालों की संख्या अच्छी-खासी रहती है. इसलिए निश्चित समय में इनका प्रभावी तरीके से जवाब देना भी एक चुनौती है. इस लिहाज से अभ्यास बेहद जरूरी है. अभ्यास लिखने का. अभ्यास निश्चित समय में निश्चित सवालों के जवाब देने का.

इसका एक तरीका यह है कि आप जिन खबरों को पढ़ते हैं और उसमें से जिसके बारे में विस्तार से जानकारी जुटाते हैं उन पर कुछ न कुछ नियम से लिखें. आप जो लिखें उसमें घटना की जानकारी, उससे जुड़े तथ्य और विभिन्न पक्षों की जानकारी के साथ-साथ विचारों को भी शामिल करें. क्योंकि प्रवेश परीक्षा में टिप्पणी करने के लिए आम तौर पर कहा जाता है. कम से कम शब्दों में प्रभावी तरीके से अपनी बात कहने की क्षमता विकसित करना बेहद उपयोगी साबित हो सकता है.

हिंदी पत्रकारिता में अनुवाद भी करवाया जाता है. इसलिए अनुवाद का भी अभ्यास कर लें. अगर आप एक ही मीडिया समूह के हिंदी और अंग्रेजी अखबार दोनों लेते हैं तो उसमें आपको कई खबरें समान मिल जाएंगी. अंग्रेजी से पहले खुद अनुवाद करें और फिर हिंदी संस्करण में प्रकाशित अनुदित खबर से मिलाएं. अनुवाद के दौरान हमेशा इस बात का ध्यान रखा जाना चाहिए कि यह शब्दशः नहीं हो बल्कि अनुवाद ऐसा किया जाए कि खबर पढ़कर कहीं से यह नहीं लगे कि यह अनुदित है. हिंदी के कठिन शब्दों के इस्तेमाल से बचना चाहिए और आम बोलचाल के शब्दों का इस्तेमाल करना चाहिए.

इतनी तैयारी के बाद आप लिखित परीक्षा में किसी परेशानी का सामना नहीं करेंगे. परीक्षा केंद्र के बाहर के माहौल से बिल्कुल भयभीत नहीं हों. वहां मोटी-मोटी किताबें पढ़ते हुए लोग आपको दिखेंगे लेकिन चिंता की कोई बात नहीं. एकदम शांत होकर जाएं और सामने घड़ी रखकर समय का सही प्रबंधन करते हुए सवालों का जवाब प्रभावी तरीके से दें.

हां, परीक्षा हॉल में बिना कुछ खाए जाने की जरूरत नहीं है. कई लोग तनाव की वजह से कुछ खाते ही नहीं है. ऐसा करने से तनाव घटता तो नहीं बल्कि और बढ़ जाता है. परीक्षा से पहले दोस्तों के साथ हंसी-मजाक करते हुए माहौल को खुशनुमा बनाए रखें. अगर एक बार आपने तनाव को हावी हो जाने दिया तो फिर मुश्किल है.

अब बारी साक्षात्कार की

पहली बात चिंता छोड़ो और तनाव को हावी मत होने दो. पत्र-पत्रिकाओं के अध्ययन के बाद आपके पास इतनी जानकारी होती है कि आप सवालों का जवाब दे सकें. पर साक्षात्कार में आपके आत्मविश्वास और पूरे व्यक्तित्व को समझने की कोशिश की जाती है. आपके दिमाग में यह बात साफ होनी चाहिए कि आप पत्रकारिता में क्यों आ रहे हैं.

इस बात को हमेशा ध्यान में रखें कि आईआईएमसी जनता के पैसे से चलने वाला संस्थान है और इसलिए संस्थान आपसे व्यक्तिपरक नहीं बल्कि एक विस्तृत सोच की अपेक्षा रखता है. साक्षात्कार में पूछे जाने हर तरह का सवाल सामान्य तरीके से पूरे आत्मविश्वास के साथ दें.

जो सवाल नहीं आता है उसके बारे में बेहद विनम्रता के साथ यह बता दें कि मुझे नहीं पता. कभी भी घुमाने की कोशिश नहीं करें क्योंकि जो लोग वहां बैठे होते हैं वे इस क्षेत्र के वरिष्ठ लोग होते हैं और उन्हें सही-गलत का पता होता है. घुमाने का बेहद नकारात्मक असर पड़ता है. वहीं विनम्रता से इनकार करने को आपकी ईमानदारी से जोड़कर देखा जाता है. हर किसी को हर चीज की जानकारी हो, ऐसा संभव नहीं है. साक्षात्कार में किसी एक खास राजनीतिक विचारधारा की वकालत करने से बचें क्योंकि पत्रकार से किसी खास राजनीतिक विचारधारा की वकालत करने की अपेक्षा नहीं की जाती है.

हमेशा इस बात का ध्यान रखें कि आईआईएमसी में दाखिले की प्रक्रिया बेहद सरल है और इस छात्रों की सहजता को ध्यान में रखकर ही तैयार किया गया है.

इसलिए चिंता और भय को अपने आसपास भी नहीं फटकने दें.

Well for me it was a dream come true when I saw the first list of selected people for GD & PI and saw my name in it. I wasn’t unsure of the possibility but then when the selection is not amongst hundreds or thousands the chance becomes very challenging. It was then when I actually started preparing.

Getting selected in written exam is not so difficult, your know how on the current and important issues, your quality of picking up facts and seeing the issues in a balanced way, the style of expressions and ability to finish off the question paper in limited time can ease your tension of selection in written exam. I believe it’s the group discussion followed by the interview where they actually decide on whether to give you the entry ticket.

And for both the requirements presence of mind, eagerness to prove yourself and self confidence are the most essential things. GD topics can range from issues like global warming, women reservation, media hype to Sania Mirza's marriage, approach of media on issues like militancy to fatwa on Salman Khan, difference between print and TV in dealing with current happenings, naxals demanding their due, carnage of naxals in sildah of 24 EFR jawans and state govt. putting the blame on EFR, Indo-Pak relations, inflation and govt. role to handle it and etc.

You may have in depth knowledge on all the above said issues but you need to put forth your point in the GD and you need to be articulate enough, you may have applied for the print journalism course but in GD they do see how well conversant you are and how deftly you can put yourself forward when speaking among a peer group. Then comes the interview where in a panel of judges from different places - few from media, few from institutes and some of IIMC would be sitting in a row and welcoming you with a warm but yet subtly suggestive smile.

You shall be seated in front of the panel and your heart will give a little flutter. It is that moment when you need to compose all your thoughts and present the best thinking part of your personality. It is very difficult to appear absolutely cool, as they will ask questions on various topics and issues. Some may seem unrelated to the admission purpose directly- like what does your father do, or your mother is working, but don’t let that take you off guard. I guess that is just a way to measure that how focused you remain amidst distractions.

But please put one thing in your mind clearly that do not for once also try to fake your self. Not knowing something is no sin, but trying to portray that you have knowledge of the topic but just not recollecting it momentarily will take to more troubled waters. If you feel you don’t know a certain thing you either change the topic or say that you don’t know. And be prepared to clarify that learning is an endless process and that you are a quick learner too. A few witty replies to cheer everyone are a nice idea, but never cross your limits.

Well dressed candidates are always having a plus point. A little smile makes you look more confident. And do not forget to read the newspaper that morning and see the headlines. One question is a sure guess- do you read newspapers or watch news channel? Which ones? Why these? And then will pop the question that what was the headline of the newspaper you named? So before you name your choices be thorough with them. Once again reminding you don’t try to fake answers. Lastly, one little advise, we may be learned or well read enough but people sitting in the panel are there in the business for a long run, so we ought to give them credit and respect.

Rest is hard work. And may the best of the lot get the chance to read learn and live IIMC.

If you are actually reading this blog I can safely assume that you aspire to study at IIMC the coming academic year. To be even more specific you want to be a tv journalist. Like any examinee you would be a little nervous and trying to understand how you can crack the exam. Well then my advice is its time for you to relax, sit back and beat the prevalent heat wave conditions across half the nation.

No I haven't lost my metal balance nor am I a hacker who has posted his own views and I am definitely not an aspirant trying to spoil your preparations to better my chances (nice conspiracy theory- we journo types revel in them). But I am simply telling you what you might do to prepare for the exam on May 21st. (Admission Notice)

Okay before you all right me off as a crazy bugger let me explain. Take a look at the various entrance exam question papers posted on this blog (Question Papers) and what is the common thread? You might turn around and say there is no set format, there is no fixed parameter, every year is different. And I will say you are absolutely right. But take another look and you will see that all the questions whether they are asking you to write a short essay or just two words, are based on current affairs. Every single one of them.

Let's pick up a few samples

Q1: TV news channels are replacing newspapers in India. Discuss in 500 words

Q4: Discuss within 200 words your views on India's look east policy OR significance of recent elections in Nepal?

Lets look at the 2007 question paper first. Q1 simply asks you to discuss in 500 words any of the 4 topics. 500 words is actually not much but if you have no clue about a topic these 500 words can look like a magnum opus. 3 out of the 4 topics are directly related to news events that happened in the preceding year. Only the electoral college discussion is not a direct news event but considering that the President was elected in that year you should have a fair bit idea of how the country's President is elected.

It is clear that across these two years the examinee is trying to assess your interest in current affairs and frankly if you don't have an interest in news you should not be giving this exam at all, in fact the career choice is a little faulty then. What you write in the discussion is entirely up to you. You can take either side but you should be able to justify your arguments. For instance if you are not happy with the US president's visit to India in 2007 you should be able to point out why. Are there some policies you don't agree with or is it what he said. 500 words is not a lot of words and once you get a flow you realise that the word limit is reached soon. So it is absolutely necessary for you to make as many arguments as you can. Try and be succinct.

The other two questions in 2007 are directly related to news. One is about events while the other is about channels from various countries. Now if you have been watching tv (which you should since you aspire to be a tv journalist) you will instantly recollect that Geo tv is in Pakistan and was in news for its confrontations with the Pakistani establishment under Musharraf. Also one of its senior journalist Hamid Mir is seen frequently on several channels taking part in debates. CNN of course is pretty famous, as is channel 4. Sun TV is also quite visible on our cable networks that leaves out NHK (frankly, I have never heard about it but using the exclusion principle we have come to the right choice).

Now to 2008, again the same format, discussion based on a current affair. The debate about TV news channels and newspapers is a big one and an ongoing one. While in India we haven't really felt it. In US and UK newspapers are fighting for their survival. I am sure if you have read newspapers and watched tv news in the past two years you could not have missed the impact of the current recession on media across the world. Similarly India look East Policy and Nepal elections were quite decent headlines at their time.

Which brings us to the bottom line and it is this. You need to brush up your current affairs. Read newspapers, magazines, internet news portals and watch tv news. When you read opinion pieces or watch tv debates try and form your own arguments simultaneously (it will help in the discussion for your exams) . One more thing when you watch news coverage on the channels try and understand what they are doing and how they are doing it. By now you would have definitely come across criticism for the electronic media for its coverage of 26/11, but there are other events also that you can think about. Ask yourself about several news stories. Do I Like it ? Why don't I like a particular news coverage? These kind of questions do come up at times. What is the difference between news on 24x7, CNN-IBN and TIMES NOW (there are others but I picked the top three). If you like watching business news channels, you should know how many of them are there, how do they go about their daily news and how are they different from each other.

You should have a pretty good idea of almost all big events that have shaped our present or our future. Right to Education, Paid news, Kasab trial, Census 2011 and the mess with the IPCC are just some of the points that come to my mind in just about 15 seconds. You should have about 100 such topics, people, companies that you need to read about because of what they have done in the past one year. So how do you know about all this. Simple, read, watch and listen.

No need to run around fretting about the exam, they cant ask you physics or chemistry, nor will they ask you questions on the relativity theorem. All questions will be on current affairs and there are no books on what is happening now. So just sit back, relax, switch on the a/c, cooler or the fan and start reading and watching news. An exam that actually asks you to watch tv, now in this heat what more can you ask for?

PS: If you feel bored with all the newspapers and news channels its an indication that this exam and this career is not what you really want. Do not choose tv journalism just because you want to see yourself on television (try Ekta Kapoor for that). You need to have passion for news and a 'need to know'.

Challenges: Journalism & Mass Communication

NOT long ago, diehard breeds of journalists in India used to make condescending, if somewhat supercilious, statements that 'journalists are born, not made.' And, 'schools or colleges or universities cannot produce journalists;' they are 'heaven born.' Even if you cursorily, or curiously, glance at the scenario in India today, if nothing else, you will non- chalantly discover for yourself that colleges and university departments of journalism and mass communication are dotting all over the country, and doing just fine. Besides, these are multiplying. Moreover, if nothing else, majority of JMC graduates passing out of these colleges have prodigiously debunked these long-held myths.

Again, if you cursorily, or curiously visit any nook and corner of the country today, you will invariably notice that all media organizations, small, medium or big; private or public-owned; semi-government or government-owned; bristle with college or university trained journalism and mass communication graduates. And, you will discern many of them occupying junior and senior positions at all levels in these establishments.

Ironically though, most senior journalism teachers now avidly recall and bemoan the days when the mass media industry-walas used to disdainfully look down upon 'our' products as 'half-baked', not even good enough 'for dotting the i's or crossing the t's.' I myself remember the occasions when any requests to consider journalism degree holders even for lowest level journalistic jobs would be like a 'dialogue of the deaf.' Even in the U.S. where journalism education was first initiated in the 1900s, JMC schools had a 'relatively low status,' according to Dr. Everette E. Dennis, a distinguished professor and director of communication center and chairman of media and entertainment industries track at the Fordham Graduate School of Business, Fordham University in Bronx, New York.

With the onset of computer and satellite age, globally speaking, mass media environment has been transformed drastically in content and contours. Fortunately, as Dennis points out, 'celebration and success is in the air,' as for JMC teaching, training or research organizations are concerned. A large number of factors have contributed for this total overhaul and change of attitudes, perspective and posturing towards studies, training and research in journalism and mass communication education all over the world.

The first and foremost reason for this new outlook for media studies and training in India particularly is the liberal and generous private funding, supplemented by the University Grants Commission for providing faculty, technical and professional infra-structure. These financial grants have profusely boosted universities' and state governments' efforts for initiating new and upgrading existing teaching, training and research programmes in almost all areas of journalism and mass communication in the country today.

Another perhaps most compelling and driving reason is the consummate and ingenious revamp of the course curricula of all the JMC programmes in India. Call it American influence or the need of the hour in media industry's demand for particularly distinctive type of educated and trained human power, universities' JMC departments have, by and large, risen to the occasion in meeting the industry's needs to a great extent.

Moreover, the 2001-2002-UGC--prepared model JMC course curricula for graduate and post-graduate levels (of which I was personally in charge) have gone a very long way in creating salutary industry climate for the newly set up graduate and post-graduate JMC schools' products in all sorts of media positions – print, electronic, public/corporate communication, advertising, online, entertainment, call it what you will.

But wait a minute! In the atmosphere of this unusual bonhomie, let's, university JMC faculty, sit up and frankly evaluate the pluses and minuses of even these newly-crafted curricula. In addition, it's also the time for a down-to-earth re-assessment and reappraisal of the curricula, and introspection for the faculty and all others involved in teaching and training of the current crop of journalism and mass communication graduates in India.

On a rough estimate, at present there are some 125 old and new universities, institutes, and colleges of journalism, mass communication and allied media studies spread all over the country—from Kashmir to Kerala, from Gujarat to Arunachal Pradesh -- churning out more than 5,000 graduates annually. It'll not be incorrect to say that currently all media of mass communication in India are having a blast time. According to a recent press report on media reach and public access, there were at least 480 television channels, up from 120 in 2003; more than 80 million homes connected with satellite and cable connections -- some 113 million people watch Hindi channels alone; in 2009 television market in its entirety, including subscriptions has been estimated at Rs. 24,000 crore, with an ad revenue totalling easily around Rs. 8,200 crore, likely to grow to Rs. 15,000 crore, with overall television market sure to exceed Rs.47,300 crore by 2013.

Besides, new and highly sophisticated television and FM radio stations are propping up at frenzied speed in every far and near nook and cranny of India. Multi-coloured daily newspapers and glossy magazines in all national languages and even rarely known dialects are being brought out commanding high circulations. These are some of the new, cardinal and emerging media trends in the country today.

Meanwhile, thanks to the World Wide Web, reaching, accessing and communicating with the global community has literally been reduced to minutes and seconds. Internet has further swelled the ranks of media related individuals, institutions and industries. Now, everybody can become a journalist and a media person. Blogging has touched raging proportions. Web and net journalism is the need of the hour. What's needed today, that Prof. Lee Becker of Georgia University's center for international mass communication training and research says, is 'certification' such as – developing specialized master's courses, like science and health journalism, environment communication, national defence and civil security journalism, and rural and development journalism. Such programmes would go a long way in creating awareness of obscure areas of communication, and at the same time exploring new vistas of studies, research and employment. Also, advertising, public relations and corporate communication, event management and celebrity media are briskly accelerating and extending horizons of print and electronic media worldwide.

Another area yet to receive adequate attention in our JMC university courses is the swarming media convergence. Intimate knowledge of pod casting and being somewhat of a techno-geek will be a prime requisite for every student. Of course, basic and required qualifications of the journalists and media persons of tomorrow will be to possess the essential and core skills of journalism, such as reporting, lead writing and online editing.

Meanwhile, we witness daily that the ubiquitous impact of all kinds of foreign mass media are encompassing every section of our society at a breakneck speed. Also, these media are marvellously, if iniquitously, moulding and formatting and reformatting all of our own media content and audiences, most intimately and instantly.

Obviously, therefore, in order to keep full-scale pace with the minute-by-minute transforming media output, JMC faculty, teaching and research institutions will have to be copiously mandated to rigorously update their classroom and field presentations, training equipment, research tool and techniques. As every aspect of pedagogy, training and research is being comprehensively controlled and dictated by computers and ultra modern electronic gadgets, all JMC faculty, students and everyone involved in the process will have to compulsorily attain and command fullest sway over them. However at the same time, let's be cautious. As a distinguished American journalism professor, Dr. Jean Folkerts of North Carolina University warns: 'Journalism educators and journalism education should push the technology, not be pushed by it. We should explore new techniques, new possibilities, new structures and new methods. We should be early adopters and innovators.' So, integrate new technologies into every course slowly.

Meanwhile, let us not forget that media industries all over the world are openly and aggressively embracing digital revolution, and extensive and instant globalization in content and style, we in India cannot afford to sit back and close our eyes to these ground realities. In order to adequately withstand and competently meet this amazingly cosmopolitan challenge of innovatively and ebulliently fast-moving new social and communication environment, all of us will be 'required to teach new metrics that measure up' to the national and international standards. Failing this will not only be disastrous for education in journalism and mass communication, its teaching faculty, and students, but also for the country, and its honour at large.

Countdown for Examination Begins...

The countdown for the exam has begun, we assume that most of you would have studied to the best of your knowledge. Here are some last moment tips

First those who tend to get nervous before exams, don't panic just remember you have prepared enough and be a little more confident, trust your preperation. When i rote IIMC exam i attemted questions and striked them off, try and avoid that as you end up wastng a lot of time.

Second, as i had mentioned earlier make some points, dont run after facts n figures Like in case of satyam, doesnt matter how muh the scam was for, dosent matter how muh the strenght of satyam was, just know the scam inside out as to wat all happend. This doesnt mean you'l go n write the cronology of developments. Analyse the political aspect as in how quickly Sebi took control n handled the situation, the socio-economic aspect as in how satyam episode let to sacking of employees, and most importantly hw the incidence has dented India's image in the global arena.

Third, i repeat it again try and be as simple as possible in terms of your language, dont make your answer copy too flowery. Short and simple sentences help the reader understand what you mean to say. Also it gives a break to the reader's eyes n mind. Now imagine if i would have ritten all that in one sentence how difficult it would have been to understand.

Fourth, do not worry yourself with the interview. I understand your concern for the interview. You need to clear the entrance first, as that will get you a seat in the interview. Just relax n chill out.

Fifth, the answer is never objective as a question holds around 15 marks. Also 90% of the applicants would be prepared for the exam, you don't have to prove your knowledge, you just need to understand the demand of the question and be different from others. your knowledge of the topic, automatically gets reflected the way you attempt an answer. Try and simplify things in your head first, coz if you are confused how will you rite an answer? Every question has two sides, understand it and den support the one you think u can give suitable examples, and support your points (already explained in 2nd point).

Sixth, go through the personalities and se if there is any update on it, for example Rahul Gandhi you can say he won from amethi for the 2nd time also PM Manmohan has expresses that he would like to include Gandhi in his cabinet.

I think all these points will be enough for you to think and plan how to attempt a question. Also please read about commonwealth games as in How prepared is India, IPL going to SA, India's achievement at Olympics and can India repeat the history of gold medals at internationsl meets like Olympics and commonwealth.

There is no surety of these questions. but it would be good if you are prepared with them. Th ereason why i m suggesting the topics is because India will be hosting CYG and out athletes just came back from Beijing.

Suggestions for IIMC preparations

I haven't gone through the last two years IIMC Entrance Test papers so I can't say if the pattern has been changed but what I can suggest you are a few points which, I hope, will help you during the entrance test and interview–

1. A good level of general awareness is must to crack IIMC entrance as most of the questions will be asked from this field only. Go through the main social, political, economical, International and sports news of the last six months. It's good if you have collected the newspaper/magazine cuttings of major events. In case you haven't arranged it, do it as soon as possible through net or elsewhere. There is no need to read one year-old magazine.

2. Don't read anything new two days of the entrance. It will be better if you revise old stuff.

3. For better analysis of news, you can read magazines like The India Today, Frontline, Outlook, Pritoyogita Darpan or Competition Success Review. Among papers, reading editorials of the Hindu and the Indian Express will help you a great deal.

4. In the examination hall, be positive from the very first moment. Don't think those who have cracked IIMC entrance test were from some other world. They were like you, like me. If they can, why can't you?

5. While attempting question paper, avoid making grammatical errors.

6. Don't write lengthy answers. It's the content that matters at IIMC, not the length. If you have knowledge about a particular topic, you can convey your message in 400 words, on contrast, if you are short of facts you can waste a lot of pages of no use.

7. Write what you think or feel about a topic, not what you have read about it in a magazine or in a newspaper. Convince your point properly and don't write contrary points about the same thing as it may confuse the examiner also.

8. Attempt the shorter questions (abbreviations, one, two or four marks) first as those will be less time consuming and will give you the maximum score. Avoid writing wrong facts and unnecessary things as it could be easily pointed out by the examiner.

9. Duration of entrance exam is two hour, so don't waste much time on one answer. Time management is very necessary, better if you keep a watch in front of you.

10. Written test carries 85% marks, so score as much as possible in it as it can compensate your marks in case you do badly in the interview.

Suggestions for the interview

Interview is your personality test. It is what you have imbibed in your persona in last 20 or 21 years. So, there is nothing particular that I can suggest you but a few advices I would like to give you, are–

1. Your appearance is the first thing a panellist will notice. So, get dressed smartly. Better, if you put on formals.

2. Don't lose your confidence at any point of interview. Be specific and straightforward in your answers. Panellist can create weird situations but don't get pressurised.

3. Don't present the wrong facts to convince your point to the panellists. They are specialists in their own field and if you try to make them fool you will be on the losing end. If you don't know the right answer, tell them politely.

4. If you have any published work with you, show it to them, it will give them a good impression.

5. Don't let them feel as if you are coming in journalism accidently. Convince them you are choosing the field because you are the most appropriate person for it.

I hope these suggestions/advices will definitely work for you to get into IIMC. And last but not the least, even if you won't get through, don't feel inferior. If you believe in hard work and are focused in your life you will definitely get success, if not now then later, if not at IIMC then somewhere else. It's your attitude that will win you the race, not the success in just one entrance.

Many people could not get into fields where they wanted to go but they still became successful because their attitude towards life was positive and no work was small or inferior to them. Thanks. And all the best.

' थोड़ा सा गाइड ' कर दूं

कुछ साल बीत चुके हैं.

IIMC(New Delhi) से पास आउट हुए लेकिन यादें अभी भी बाकी हैं और ये यादें आज भी चेहरे पर मुस्कान ला देती हैं। उस समय हम सबको अखबारों और न्यूज चैनलें के पदों में विभाजित नहीं किया गया था। हम असिस्टेंट प्रोड्यूसर,प्रोड्यूसर, ईपी या एंकर नहीं थे सिर्फ छात्र थे...आईआईएमसी के छात्र। आज एक परिचित का फोन आया जिनके छोटे भाई आईआईएमसी की प्रवेश परीक्षा देने वाले हैं। वो चाहते थे कि मैं उनके भाई को ' थोड़ा सा गाइड ' कर दूं और बताऊं कि आईआईएमसी में प्रवेश के लिए किस तरह का परीक्षा होती है। तो जनाब उन्हे तो मैने बता दिया लेकिन और भी बहुत से लोग हैं जो ये परीक्षा दे रहे हैं। मेरी कोशिश है कि मैं उन्हे भी ' थोड़ा सा गाइड ' कर सकूं। वजह सिर्फ इतनी है कि जब मैने ये परीक्षा दी थी तब मुझे भी किसी ने ' थोड़ा सा गाइड ' किया था। उम्मीद करता हूं कि गाइड करने का ये सिलसिला यूं ही चलता रहेगा।

जब मैंने ये परीक्षा दी थी तब इसका स्वरूप आज से थोड़ा बदला हुआ था। मैंने खुद

' रेडियो एवं टेलीविजन पत्रकारिता ' की परीक्षा दी थी लेकिन दूसरे कोर्स यानि हिंदी पत्रकारिता और अंग्रेजी पत्रकारिता की प्रवेस परीक्षा का स्वरूप भी कमोबेश एक सा ही है। तो पहले बात ' रेडियो एवं टेलीविजन पत्रकारिता ' की।

रेडियो एवं टेलीविजन पत्रकारिता ' की प्रवेश परीक्षा में दो पेपर होते हैं-
पहला पेपर- Objective Type (50 Marks) -
जैसा कि नाम से जाहिर है इसमें Objective Type सवाल होते हैं जिसमें उत्तर के रूप में चार ऑप्शन्स होते है और आपसे सही जवाब की दरकार होती है। आम तौर पर इसमें साल की बड़ी घटनाएं- राजनीतिक, अंतर्राष्ट्रीय घटनाएं,खेल,सिनेमा यहां तक कि देशों की राजधानी और करेंसी के बारे में भी सवाल होते हैं। हालांकि इस पेपर में सवाल ज्यादा मुश्किल नहीं होते और यहीं वजह है कि आमतौर पर बड़ी संख्या में छात्र इस पेपर में 50 में से 40 या उससे भी ज्यादा नंबर पा जाते हैं। कोशिश कीजिए कि इससे कम नंबर आप भी न पाएं वरना महोदय बहुत कठिन है डगर पनघट की। मेरा मानना है कि आईआईएमसी की प्रवेश परीक्षा की 'तैयारी' एक या दो सप्ताह दिन-रात की पढ़ाई करके नही हो सकती। इसके लिए आपको देश-विदेश कि प्रमुख घटनाओं पर नजर रखनी होगी। बहुत बड़ी घटनाओं की तारीख और दूसरी डीटेल्स के नोट्स बनाए जा सकते हैं।
दूसरा पेपर-
Essay Type ( 35 Marks)- ये होता है वो पेपर जो आपको पहले पेपर में 40 या उससे ऊपर नंबर लाने वाले छात्रों से अलग करता है। देश के प्रमुख मुद्दों पर आपके विचार क्या हैं? और उन विचारों को आप कैसे व्यक्त करते हैं, इस पेपर के माद्यम से यही परखा जाता है। पिछले पेपर की तरह इसमें तुक्के की कोई गुंजाइश नहीं। आमतौर पर राष्ट्रीय या अंतर्राष्ट्रीय मुद्दे मसलन इस साल ओबामा की सरकार या फिर इस बार के लोक सभा चुनाव में ' पप्पू कैम्पेन ' या मिली-जुली सरकार के बारे में आपके विचार। इसके अलावा भारत की तरफ से ऑस्कर में भेजी गई फिल्म या फिर स्लमडॉग मिलियनेर के बारे में भी एक बड़ा सवाल आ सकता है। तो कुछ बड़ी घटनाएं तो ऐसी है जिनके बारे में आप 'तैयारी' कर सकते हैं लेकिन इनके अलावा भी अगर कुछ आए तो कोशिश करें कि संतुलित लिखें। आपके लेख में विचार साफ तौर पर व्यक्त हों और हैं कोशिश करें निष्पक्ष लिखने की। सबसे बड़ी बात- साफ साफ लिखें।
तीसरा- इंटरव्यू और ग्रुप डिस्कशन(
15 Marks)- अगर पहले दो पेपर अच्छे हुए हैं तो इंटरव्यू और ग्रुप डिस्कशन में आपका चांस निश्चित रूप से बढ़ जाता है। इंटरव्यू में तकरीबन हर किसी से पूछा जाता है कि आप पत्रकार क्यों बनना चाहते हैं। तो सोच समझ कर उत्तर दें और हां ज्यादा लप्फाजी और साहित्यिक उत्तर देने से बचें। जो आपका इंटरव्यू ले रहे हैं वो कई वर्षों से पत्रकारिता में हैं और इसकी रग-रग से वाकिफ हैं...इसलिए ईमानदारी से जवाब दें।

ग्रुप डिस्कशन में एक टॉपिक दिया जाएगा और फिर आपको कुछ समय दिया जाएगा। ये देखा जाएगा कि आप विचारों को कैसे सफाई से व्यक्त करते हैं और किस हद तक अपने तर्कों से दूसरों को कन्विंस करते हैं। अगर किसी दूसरे की बात से सहमत हैं तो बेकार में उससे बहस करने की कोशिश न करें, हां चुप न रहें, अपनी बात सामने जरूर रखें।

तो मुख्य रूप से यही कुछ बातें हैं जो आपको ध्यान रखनी हैं। हो सकता है कि अंकों का ब्रेकअप या पेपर में थोड़ा-बहुत बदलाव आया हो लेकिन सवाल कमोबेश इसी पैटर्न पर आते रहे हैं। तकरीबन दो सौ सीटों के लिए हजारों लोग परीक्षा देते हैं इसलिए आसान तो बिलकुल नहीं है। लेकिन आईआईएमसी एक सुखद अनुभव होगा और आपको आगे के लिए अच्छी तरह तैयार करेगा ऐसा मेरा मानना है। मेरी शुभकामनाएं आप सबके साथ हैं। लेकिन इतना ही कहूंगा कि जो भी हो आगे किसी न किसी को

' थोड़ा सा गाइड ' जरूर करते रहिएगा। ये सिलसिला रुकना नहीं चाहिए।

रास्ता आसान है और पास भी...

पिछले कई दिनों से कई नए छात्र मुझे मेल कर रहे हैं और पूछ रहे हैं कि आईआईएमसी की परीक्षा में क्या पूछा जाएगा या फिर अंतिम समय में क्या तैयारी की जाए. मैं सोचने लगता हूं काश उन दिनों में ये प्लेटफॉर्म होता तो कितना अच्छा होता. खैर, ये सब बातें तो बाद में भी होती रहेंगी. आईआईएमसी में प्रवेश परीक्षा और फिर उसके बाद इंटरव्यू. समय कम है और अब तो शायद एक हफ्ते से भी कम समय रह गया है.

देखिए, ये मान के लिए कि समय पास आते-आते ज्यादा चीजों के पीछे भगाने का कोई फायदा नहीं है. क्योंकि आप जितने नए चीजों को जानेंगे उतना अपने आप को कन्फ्जूज्ड पाएंगे. रोज नई घटनाएं हो रही हैं और रोज एक नया विषय हेडलाइन बन जाता है. आखिर आप किस-किस विषय को पढ़ेंगे.

मुझे याद है कि जब भी आईआईएमसी में हिंदी पत्रकारिता के प्रमुख आनंद प्रधान से कोई स्टुडेंट पूछता था कि सर नए चैनल में एक नए स्टुडेंट्स से क्या सवाल पूछे जाएंगे तो उनके चेहरे में गुस्सा साफ देखा जा सकता था. दरअसल, वो हमेशा हमें बताते थे कि भई आप किसी आईआईटी या एमबीबीएस के एग्जाम के लिए तो नहीं जा रहे हो. जहां तुमसे गणित या विज्ञान का कोई अजीब सा फॉर्मूला पूछा जाएगा. आप अगर पत्रकारिता के छात्र हैं तो आपसे उससे जुड़ी चीज ही पूछी जाएगी. ठीक उसी तरह मैं भी यही बात हर उस परीक्षार्थी को समझाता हूं जो मुझसे पूछता है कि क्या पढ़ा जाए और क्या नहीं पढ़ा जाए.

कुछ जरूरी बातें

• पिछले छह महीनों में घटित हुई 20 बड़ी खबरों की लिस्ट बनाइए. राजनीति, अर्थव्यवस्था, खेल और मनोरंजन जगत.

• लिस्ट के सभी मुद्दों पर तीन से चार अलग-अलग तर्क-वितर्क पर लिखे लेख को ध्यान से पढ़िए और समझिए.

• पिछले 5-6 महीनों में अंतरराष्ट्रीय जगत की 10 बड़ी खबरों के साथ भी ऊपर लिखे तरीके से तैयारी करें.

• पिछले चार-पांच महीनों की पत्रिकाएं देखिए. खासकर इंडिया टुडे और फ्रॉंटलाइन. उनके कवर स्टोरी को पूरा पढ़ जाइए. पिछले कुछ सालों से आईआईएमसी में विवेचनात्मक प्रश्न भी पूछे जा रहे हैं. इससे इस तरह के सवालों के जवाब में मदद मिलेगी.

• पिछले एक साल से छाए रहे बड़ी हस्तियों की लिस्ट बनाइए और उनके प्रोफाइल को जानिए. ये भी पढ़िए कि वो क्यों खबरों में बने रहे. इसमें भी राजनीति, अर्थव्यवस्था, खेल और फिल्म जगत और अंतरराष्ट्रीय जगत की हस्तियों को शामिल कीजिए.

एक परेशानी का हल तो हो गया. अब दूसरा बड़ा सवाल कि कैसे लिखा जाए. तो जनाब आप किसी भी पत्रकार से पूछ लीजिए, सभी के मुंह से एक ही जवाब मिलेगा, हमेशा आम बोल-चाल की भाषा में लिखो. पर मुझे आज भी एक सवाल सताता है कि एक नए विद्यार्थी को आप आम बोल-चाल की भाषा में लिखने बोलेंगे तो क्या सच वो में आम भाषा में लिख लेगा. परीक्षा में आम बोल-चाल की भाषा से मतलब है कि आपकी लिखने की शैली कैसी भी हो पर आप उन शब्दों का इस्तेमाल बिल्कुल न करें जो आप सामान्य बातचीत में अपने घर और दोस्तों के साथ नहीं करते. मसलन, अपितु, यद्यपि, इत्यादि, तथापि, किंतु, परंतु जैसे शब्दों का इस्तेमाल न करना सेहतमंद होगा. याद रखें कि आप महाभारत या रामायण की स्क्रिप्ट नहीं लिखने जा रहे हैं और ना ही आप गोलमाल के अमोल पालेकर की भूमिका निभाने जा रहे हैं जो विशुद्ध हिंदी बोलकर अपने बॉस को इम्प्रेस कर लेता है. अगर आपने ऐसी भाषा का इस्तेमाल किया तो कॉपी जांचने वाला आपकी कॉपी बीच में छोड़कर दूसरी कॉपी पर जा सकता है.

परीक्षा से ठीक पहले के लिए एक सलाह

जब आप परीक्षा हॉल के बाहर खड़े होंगे तो आप कुछ चीज जरूर नोटिस करेंगे जैसे कि कुछ लोग आपको कुर्ता और झोले के साथ दिखेंगे. कुछ आपको कोट-टाई में भी नजर आएंगे. कई के हाथों में पत्रकारिता की मोटी-मोटी किताबें होंगी या फिर कोई आपको बात करता दिखेगा कि उसने किस-किस बड़े पत्रकार की आईआईएमसी की प्रवेश परीक्षा का सेमिनार अटेंड किया है. मेरी एक बात मानिए, ये सब कोरे दिखावा के अलावा कुछ नहीं होता. आपने जो तैयारी की है और आप जिस शैली में लिखेंगे, उससे महत्वपूर्ण कुछ भी नहीं है. खादी के कपड़े पहनने या मोटी किताब या फिर सेमिनार अटेंड करने से ना आज तक कोई पत्रकार बना है और ना कभी बन पाएगा.

एक और बात. परीक्षा देने वालों में 90 प्रतिशत लोग बिना किसी तैयारी के बस परीक्षा का फॉर्मेट देखने के लिए आते हैं इसलिए आपका असली मुकाबला सिर्फ 10 फीसदी लोगों से होगा. इसलिए ईमानदारी से तैयारी कीजिए और परीक्षा दीजिए. और इसलिए मैं कह रहा हूं कि रास्ता आसान है और पास भी. एक छोटा सा संदेश आप सभी के लिए.

खुदी को कर बुलंद इतना कि हर तकदीर से पहले, खुदा बंदे से ये पूछे कि बता तेरी रजा क्या है.

आईआईएमसी आपके इंतजार में है...

सबसे पहले एक बात जान लीजिए कि आईआईएमसी की प्रवेश परीक्षा कुछ उस तरह का इम्तिहान नहीं जिसका कोई तयशुदा फॉर्मेट या सिलेबस होता हो। किसी गाइड बुक या गेस पेपर के मार्फत आईआईएमसी में एंट्री मार लेने जैसा कोई फॉर्मूला भी काम नहीं आ सकता। बस यूं समझ लें कि आईआईएमसी एंट्रेस पेपर का कोई ओर-छोर नहीं। कहीं से भी कुछ भी पूछा जा सकता है। लेकिन अब ऐसा भी नहीं है कि आईआईएमसी कोई दूर की कौड़ी है। बस जरूरत है कि आप अप-टू-डेट रहें। खबरों की दुनिया से बेखबर ना रहें।

पिछले कुछ सालों के आईआईएमसी के पेपर्स के आधार पर सवालों को कुछ भागों में बांटा जा सकता है और फिर उस आधार पर तैयारी को अंतिम रूप दिया जा सकता है।

करेंट अफेयर्स एंट्रेंस पेपर का सबसे अहम हिस्सा होता है और पेपर में सबसे ज्यादा जोर इसी पर होता है। इसलिए हाल-फिलहाल में घटी घटनाओं, दुनिया-जहान की चर्चित शख्सियतों और खबरों के बारे में जानना बेहद जरूरी होता है। ऐसे भी सवाल हो सकते हैं कि आखिर कोई खास शख्स (नूरा अल फैज) या जगह (किलिनोच्ची) या टर्म (CoBRA) खबरों में क्यों थे? देश-विदेश की राजनीतिक-आर्थिक-कूटनीतिक स्थिति पर भी जोर हो सकता है। भारत के दूसरे देशों के साथ संबंध, दक्षिण एशिया के हालात और अंतर्राष्ट्रीय मुद्दों पर भी फोकस किया जा सकता है। इस लिहाज से पाकिस्तान, नेपाल, बांग्लादेश की आंतरिक स्थिति, 26/11 के बाद भारत-पाक संबंध, भारत-अमेरिका परमाणु करार, ओबामा की विदेश नीति, जी-20 सम्मेलन जैसे मुद्दे काफी अहम हो जाते हैं।

पेपर के मार्फत से आपकी क्रिएटिविटी और लिखने के अंदाज को भी देखा जाता है। इस लिहाज से आपके अनुभवों और विचारों को जानने की कोशिश की जाती है। मसलन- आपके एक दिन का रुटीन, परीक्षा-हॉल में आपका हाल, आगजनी-बाढ़ की आंखों देखी, हाल में देखी किसी फिल्म या पढ़ी किताब की समीक्षा आदि के बारे में भी लिखने को कहा जा सकता है। आपके पसंदीदा अखबार, न्यूज चैनल, एंकर, चैट शो, टीवी सीरियल, एडवरटाइजमेंट के बारे में भी पूछा जा सकता है। आप पत्रकारिता में क्यों आना चाहते हैं जैसे सवाल भी आपका पीछा कर सकते हैं। चूंकि इस सेक्शन के सवालों में आपकी निजी राय मांगी जाती है इसलिए जरूरी है कि इस फ्रंट में आप खुलकर और तर्क के साथ लिखें।

चूंकि आप आईआईएमसी के मार्फत मीडिया इंडस्ट्री में आना चाहते हैं इसलिए जरूरी है कि मीडिया ट्रेन्ड्स और कल्चर को भी समझें। यही वजह है कि एंट्रेस पेपर में मीडिया से जुड़े सवाल भी खूब दागे जाते हैं। स्टिंग ऑपरेशन के औचित्य से लेकर आरुषि मर्डर केस और 26/11 के दौरान मीडिया की कार्यप्रणाली तक पर सवाल हो सकते हैं। आलोचनात्मक किस्म के सवाल भी हो सकते हैं जैसे कि क्या न्यूज चैनलों पर लगाम लगाने (रेगुलेशन) की जरूरत है या फिर न्यूज ब्रॉडकास्टर्स एसोसिएशन के माध्यम से क्या चैनलों का स्व-नियमन हो रहा है? इस तरह के सवालों के दोनों पक्ष होते हैं और आपसे एक संतुलित जवाब की उम्मीद की जाती है इसलिए बेहद जरूरी है कि तर्क और उदाहरण के साथ पेश आएं।

पिछले साल के एंट्रेस पेपर में देखा देखा गया है कि ट्रांस्लेशन (हिन्दी पत्रकारिता के लिए अनुवाद) और समराइजेशन (अंग्रेजी पत्रकारिता के लिए संक्षेपण) पर भी जोर है। इसलिए इसकी प्रैक्टिस भी जरूरी है।

अब एंट्रेस पेपर में बहुत ज्यादा दिन बाकी नहीं है। उलटी गिनती शुरू हो चुकी है। एक वाक्य में कहें तो जितना पढ़ें उससे कहीं ज्यादा लिखने की प्रैक्टिस करें। तय समय के अंदर एक निश्चित शब्द-सीमा में काफी सारे सवालों के जवाब लिखने होते हैं इसलिए टाइम मैनेजमेंट बहुत बड़ा फैक्टर है। भाषा पर ध्यान देना भी बेहद जरूरी है। किसी भी विषय के दोनों पहलुओं के बारे में जानें ताकि एक बायस्ड व्यू की जगह बैलेन्स्ड एप्रोच दिखे। सवालों में आपकी राय भी मांगी जा सकती है या फिर किसी मुद्दे (मसलन- भारत-अमेरिका परमाणु करार) के सकारात्मक-नकारात्मक पहलुओं के बारे में भी बताने को कहा जा सकता है। हर तरह के टेढ़े-मेढ़े सवालों के लिए तैयार रहें। डरें नहीं बेहिचक लिखें...आईआईएमसी तो आपका इंतजार कर रहा है।

Pichle kai dino se kai naye students mujhe mail kar rahe hain aur pooch rahe hain ki IIMC ke pariksha mein kya poocha jayega yaa phir antim samay mein kya tayaari ki jaaye… main sochne lagta hu kaas oon dinon mein yeh plat form hota to kinta achcha hota…

Chaliye yeh sab baatein toh baad mein bhi hoti rahengi… IIMC mein pravesh pariksha aur phir uske baad interview… samay kam hai, aur ab toh shayad ek hafte se bhi kam samay rah gaya hai.

Dekhiye yeh maan ke chaliye ki samay paas aate aate zyada cheezo ke piche bhagne ka koi faayeda nahi hai… kyonki aap jitney naye cheezo ko jaanege utna apne aap ko confused payenge… roz nayi ghatnaaye ho rahi hain aur roz ek naya vishay headline ban jaataa hai… Akhir aap kis kis Vishay ko padenge..?

Mujhe yaad hai jab bhi IIMC mein hindi patrakaarita ke HoD Andand Pradhan jee se koi student poochta tha ki sir naye channel mein ek naye students se kya sawaal pooche jayege, to unke chahre mein gussa saaf dekha jaa sakta tha… darasal woh hamesha humein batate the ki bhai aap kisi IIT ya MBBS ke exam ke liye toh nahi jaa rahe ho, jahan tumse maths yaa science ka koi ajeeb sa formula poocha jayega… aap agar patrakaarika ke students hain to aapse usi se judi cheeze poochi jayegi . theek usi tarah main bhi yahi baat har oos pariksharthi ko samjhata hu jo mujhse poochta hai ki kya pada jaye aur kya nahi padha jaaye…

Kuch zaruri batein

1. Pichle 6 maheeno mein ghati 20 badi khabron ki list banaiye… Rajniti, arthvyavastha , khel aur manoranjan jagat...

2. List ke sabhi muddon par teen se chaar alag alag tark vitark par likhe articles ko dhyan se padiye aur samjhiye

Par mujhe aaj bhi ek sawal satata hai ki ek naye vidyarthi ko aap aam bol chal ki bhasha mein likhne bolenge toh kya sach wo mein aam bhasha mein likh lega? Ya kya koi bhi Aaj ka patrakaar patrakaarita mein aane se pahle aam bol chal ki bhasha mein likhta tha? Mujhe bilkul nahi lagta aur main jaanta hu ki koi bhi naya student IIMC ke pravesh pariksha mein kaafi koshish karne ke baavjood bhi aam bol chal ki bhasha ka sahi istemaal nahi kar pata hoga…

Dekhiya Pariskha mein aam bol chal se matlab hai aapki likhne ki shaili kaisi bhi ho par aap uun shabdon ka istemaal naa kare jo aap apni zaati zindgi mein itemaal nahi karte… jaise… apitu, yadi…yadhyap ityaadi, … aap katheen hindi se door hee rahe toh behtar hoga… yaad rakhen ki aap Mahabharat yaa Ramayan ki script nahi likhne jaa rahe hai aur naa hee aap Golmaal ke Amol Palekar ki bhumika nibhane jaa rahe hain jo vishuddh hindi bol kar apne boss ko impress kar leta hai…

Agar aapne aise bhasha ka istemaal kiya toh phir shayad examiner apki copy adhe mein chor kar dusri copy check karne lag sakta hai…

Exam se theek pahle ke liye ek salah

Jab aap examination hall ke bahar khade honge toh aap kuch cheez zarur notice karenge jaise ki kuch log aapko kurta aur jhole ke saath dikhenge, kuch aapko coat tie mein bhi nazar ayenge, kaiyon ke haaton mein moti moti patrakaarita ki kitaabein hongi yaa phir koi aapke bagal mein baat karta dikhega ki usne kis kis bade patrakaar ki IIMC pravesh pariksha ke seminar attend kiyen hain… meri ek baat maniye, yeh sab kore dikhawa ke alawa kuch nahi hota… aapne jo taiyaari ki hai aur aap jis shaili mein likhenge uusse mahatvapoorn kuch bhi nahi hai… khaadi ke kapde phanne yaa moti kitaab yaa phir seminar attend karne se naa aaj tak koi patrakaar banaa hai aur naa kabhi ban payega…

Ek baat aur exam dene walon mein 90 per cent log bina kisi taiyaari ke bas exam ka format dekhne ke liye aate hain isi liye aapka asli mukaabla sirf 10 pratishat logo se hoga… isie liye imaandaari se taiyaai kijiye aur exam dijiye… aur isi liye main kah raha hu ki Raasta asaan hai aur paas bhi...ek chota sandesh aap sabhi ke liye...

No short-cuts...

Indian Institute of Mass Communication is a place to be, for which i see no short-cuts. So if you actually want to be there, unlearn everything, & know that there are no shortcuts to success.

You just have 10 days to go, no one can tell you any trick that can help you to bell the cat (crack the entrance). At the same time, if you are confident and determined no one can stop you.

Remember the people who will be checking your answer copies are not fools, they are the experienced lot so don't think of fooling them. To be on a safer side first understand what the question demands, and then start writing your answer. Also make sure that when you say something in your answer, support it with an example.

Write in a simple language, don't bring the noise of your vocabulary. Big words may complicate your answer and complicate stuffs.

Short questions are the scoring ones, try and prepare some personalities before hand with updated information. For example: Varun Gandhi, Richard Holbrooke, Arvind Adiga..... So that you don't waste your time in the examination and can score marks by wasting least time.

There are some question which we know can/may come so try and prepare some major points. We tend to forget few things during the exam time and later regret...had we written that...ooo i knew that...shit i missed it, answers were lenghy... Remember like there are no short cuts..there are no excuses because you have to prove yourself in the exam.

Read current affairs by Vishal production, its a nice book but a very lengthy one.

Know few things but know them in-out. Its better not to know an issue than knowing it half baked.

Try and write correct english, as most of us tend to make mistakes while writing (as its spontaneous).

If you take one side in your answer conclude it by giving the counter point (eg: however this is also true) For example: India is soft on terror, but India despite its soft approach has managed to raise voice on the global platform.Write a complete answer with all possible angles.

Some people have the tendency of over questioning in the answer, if you do so remember to answer them. However you can conclude an answer with a question.

Read, Read n read as much as you can, its just 10 days to go for the exam. So ALL THE BEST FROM the alumuni association. We hope the blog was helpful, and can guide you through.

Be the Jack of all trade and master of one !

I don't think there is a guide or tutorial for how to crack the mass com exam, but of course, having a nose for whatever is happening around always helps.

First, ask yourself have you enjoyed reading news papers or magazines or have you discussed any art film in context of the changing socio-political scenario of the land? If the answer is positive, then you are in, otherwise it is hard to crack.

Some year ago, i answered a lot of questions asked on orkut's IIMC community and the summary was to have curiosity, no hesitation while asking and being a great listener. It is something where students from Bihar and UP win as they are used to prepare for various examination rights from class 10^thonwards. It does not mean that others do not crack it.

I think that whoever has the habit of reading two newspapers daily with magazines and watches TV debates, it is easy to crack.

Second, don't have the reluctance or feeling of hate toward politics as there are many questions related to that even if it is from economics or business.

The keyword is; if you have interest in NDA-UPA game, and you know Zardari and Obama, you have a chance. But don't forget Prachanda as well, no matter he controlled a tiny country called Nepal! There might be the ghost of Prabhakaran roaming around in the examination hall and lack of knowledge about the collapse of Satyam may collapse your entry.

So, you have to be jack of all and master of one. There is no written rule in the constitution of India as to which question will be asked in mass com exam. You should know about the IPL and the Slum dog as well. Yeah, you should not be PhD in that because these types of people make their life disastrous in this profession later.

As far as interview is concerned, it is all about 5 minute magic.

Be smart and prompt. Last but not least, give me the answer of one question; Why Tripuri(Madhya Pradesh) is famous for….? I give you the hint. It is related to Gandhiji. If you have the answer, you are able to sit in the hall!

जोर लगा के...

संदीप कुमार आईआईएमसी में आने से पहले झारखंड में प्रभात खबर के लिए रिपोर्टिंग कर चुके थे। 2005-06 बैच में हिन्दी जर्नलिज्म के टॉपर रहे। उन्हें स्टार टीवी का मीडियास्टार स्कॉलरशिप मिला और स्टार न्यूज में ब्रेक। इन दिनों आजतक में हैं। हाल ही में उन्हें यूनिसेफ नेशनल जर्नलिज्म स्टूडेंट अवॉर्ड के लिए चुना गया है।

सबसे पहले बधाई कि आपने आईआईएमसी के दरवाजे पर दस्तक दे दी है। अब थोड़ा और ज़ोर लगाना है ताकि ये दरवाजा भी खुल जाए।

तकरीबन दो-तिहाई रास्ता आपने तय कर लिया है और ये भी एक हकीकत है कि जितने लोगों को इंटरव्यू के लिए बुलाया गया है उनमें से कमोबेश एक-तिहाई को ही आईआईएमसी में जगह मिल पाएगी। लेकिन इतना तो तय है कि जिन्हें कामयाबी मिलेगी उनके साथ एक चीज अहम होगी और वो है- आत्मविश्वास।

इंटरव्यू में ज्यादा जोर इस बात पर होती है कि आप अपनी बात को किस तरह से रख पाते हैं और कितने पुख्ता तौर पर रख पाते हैं। ये सही है कि हर मुद्दे के दो पहलू होते हैं पर या तो आपको इस पार रहना होगा या फिर उस पार।

मसलन या तो आपको आरक्षण का समर्थक करना होगा या फिर उसका विरोध करना होगा। आप आरक्षण के पक्ष में हों या फिर विपक्ष में...आपके पास इसके लिए पुरजोर तर्क होने चाहिएं। हां, अगर इंटरव्यू बोर्ड किसी मुद्दे पर (रिजर्वेशन, न्यूक्लियर डील..) दोनों पहलू को जानना चाहे तो उसे भी बताएं। और जब इन मुद्दों पर आपकी राय मांगी जाए तो आप अपना स्टैंड साफ कर दें।

इंटरव्यू में आपसे आपके शहर, आपके कॉलेज-यूनिवर्सिटी, बीए-एमए के आपके सब्जेक्ट्स के बारे में भी पूछा जा सकता है। एक सवाल जो 101 फीसदी गारंटी के साथ पूछा जाएगा वो ये कि आखिर आप पत्रकारिता में क्यों आना चाहते हैं? आखिर आप पत्रकारिता में आकर क्या करेंगे? दस साल में आप अपने-आप को कहां देखना चाहते हैं? पत्रकारिता में आपके रोल मॉडल कौन हैं और क्यों? इंटरव्यू के सवालों की ना तो कोई सीमा होती है और ना ही इसकी कोई फेहरिश्त बनाई जा सकती है। आप किसी सवाल का जवाब नहीं जानते तो बड़ी शालीनता से मना कर दें।

अपने अनुभव से मैं यह कह सकता हूं कि इंटरव्यू के दौरान आप खुशमिजाज बने रहें...डरे-सहमे ना दिखें...आत्मविश्वास बरकरार रखें...आईआईएमसी आपका खैर-मकदम करेगा ही करेगा...

Don't jump without any idea and make illogical statements...

Prithviraj Choudhary is the currently managing the content for indya.com- STAR TV's digital media initiative and one of India's leading entertainment portals.

He topped the IIMC Entrance test for Radio and Television course in 2005 and also won the STAR TV MEDIA SCHOLARSHIP for the year 2005-2006.

He has been associated with theatre (directing, acting and set design) also and recently he made his feature film debut in Jayabrato Chatterjee's 'Love Songs'.

Very often the Group Discussion- ominously abbreviated as GD- turns out to be a real pain to get past. One doesn't know how much to say, how long to say it for, how to say it or simply what to say. When one speaks of GD, one conjures up images of a bunch of eight-ten over-zealous and extremely hyper candidates -all fighting to get their precious words of wisdom in, with the aggression not unlike a heavyweight boxer on drugs in the ring, arguments which struggle to rise above anything but noise, over-gesticulating and firm in the belief that what each one is saying is nothing but the absolute truth, and no other view points exist! Aggression, they believe is the way to go about it.Whatever topic is given, if you are not raising your voice to a cacophonic level, thumping your chest and spewing wisdom at a feverish pace,then you are not having a good GD at all.

Well- is that true? Leaving aside the wider discussion on what generally GDs are like, let me for the sake of relevance- limit myself to the GDs which happen in IIMC and give some general guidelines- culled from my personal experience of the IIMC GD I had underwent and from other GDs I have given- on how best to tackle it.

For the RTV department, the GD in my year (2005) was a quiet and very systematic affair. The interviewers presented us a topic and then to my surprise and to my relief, asked us to give them our views by turns. So immediately the whole drama of aggressive shouting and fist pounding and hurling accusations went right out of the window. Now there is no guarantee that this will be followed this year as well. So it well might turn out to be a free-for-all discussion where one has to make sure that he/she is heard above the general shouts of the other candidates, and your point is made effectively and is taken seriously. I have listed below some pointers to keep in mind to tackle any kind of GD which comes in the RTV admissions this year.

Preparation for GD :
Since you are enrolling into a Journalism course, you are expected to be up-to-date with all burning current affairs issues from every sphere. This bit is true for admission in the course, not just for GD. Generally a group discussion would be on the most recent topical issues- so it would do you good if you were to scan the newspapers/magazines/news channels on a regular basis for issues that are currently making news (hopefully you are doing that anyway).

Pay particular attention to any bit of news that might have happened a day or two before the GD date , or even the morning of the GD. In my case, we were told to comment on a particular political development which came into news the night before my GD date. So the lesson to be learnt- just be aware of what is making the latest news.

Topics of GD :
This could broadly be divided into three types- political (which would be current affairs from India and abroad),social ones ( this would include entertainment and cultural issues) and lastly on media and its general nature (ethics, the state of TV news channels, the mushrooming of so many news channels) . Since its a RTV interview - and not, let' s say a AD PR one- political topics would be emphasized on( I know of my AD PR friends who got to debate on the issue of the fairness fad, and celebrity endorsements along with a few political issues).

Sometimes the interviewer asks a group to choose a topic from a few options. Its generally chosen by a majority vote- so at best you can do is to hope the topic you are comfortable with is chosen by everyone else.

Your Arguments:
Clearly what you say in a GD regarding a particular topic is dependent on how well you know the same. Given the variety of topics you might encounter, it is of course not possible to know about everything in depth and with all details. You are not expected to do so either.

You need to have a firm opinion on the issue given and back it up solidly by cogent logical arguments, which are, in turn, borne out of facts of the case. If you are lucky and the topic is up your alley,then it should not be a problem. If its something which you are not too familiar with, then here is the good part of being in a GD. You wait and listen to the first few comments by the others, and then give your opinion on it . This way, you have some idea on what the issue is all about, why it is in contention etc.

Of course, its not the best thing to do- but its better you wait for some time and hear people out and then present an opinion , rather than jumping into it without any idea and making illogical statements. Don't wait for too long though- that will give away the fact that you are reluctant to speak on it.

In a GD, never fence sit- take a side and speak for or against it with your arguments.Keep your arguments brief ,primarily because you don't have much time and there are other people who will have to speak as well. You are not expected to get into a whole treatise. Figure out the relevant and the most strong points backing your point of view and present that. If probed further- you can go in depth with the facts you know.

The Style/Manner:
If its a GD where you are asked to speak in turns- then its simple. You just present your point of view. After everybody has spoken once, you are then free to interject or counterpoint somebody's argument. But do so without being unnecessarily mean or aggressive. You can start off by saying : "I would want to bring up the point which my fellow colleague here has made and say..." or " I would disagree with what my colleague has said on the point of ..." There is no need to be rude or overtly aggressive, just make your point and have a healthy debate.

If its a GD which is free-for-all- then its always best to be the first to speak. This way you lead the discussion to the direction you want, and additionally the authorities take notice of you instantly. Of course, it can all go to waste if you come upon with an argument which is not cogent or irrelevant! If not the first, be the second to speak, giving either the opposite viewpoint or support the point of view taken by the first speaker with additional facts and arguments. Don't repeat what has been said before.

These kind of free for all discussions-as mentioned earlier- tend to get out of control. More often than not, there will be some candidates who will deliberately raise their voice and show aggression in getting their point across. There will be someone who will not let anyone else put their point across. In such cases, the moderator of the GD intervenes. You- as a participant of such a GD- will need to be firm , loud and confident of your point of view. Resist being rude or shout or launch into an argument of who speaks first.

You can throw off an opponent who is resisting hearing others' views by saying firmly: "Clearly my friend here believes that shouting mindlessly and repeating the same point endlessly will convince us all of his view-point. It wont work..."(you can even address this directly to the opponent, and a loud voice will help!) At the end of it all- even the moderators would want to test and hear everybody out. So if a discussion is going out of hand, the moderator will interfere to stop it from becoming a mindless shouting match. Don't worry- GDs in RTV in IIMC have not been known to go such degrees. However having said that- be prepared for any situation.

Now onto the Personal Interview:
Now in my year- we were told to talk in front of a camera for two minutes on a topic , which each one of us chose from a choice of two topics given. That was our personal interview. We were given two minutes to get our thoughts together and then start. This was not carried through the next year- so I shall just generally give some pointers to crack an interview ( well- they have worked for me !). These tips- you might find- is not specifically for an interview in IIMC RTV course, but for any such interviews you might go for in the future.

Always wish your board of interviewers- since you cant wish every person sitting individually- a general greeting on everyone's direction would do.

They always start off with a customary- Tell us something about yourself. Don't say the obvious about your schooling and marks- they all know that. Talk about your interests, why you want to do the course, issues in media you feel strongly about. Again be succinct and brief.

If you don't know something, then say so. Try not to talk without any knowledge- it seldom helps- specially since this a journalism interview.

One often thinks that spewing out all information you possibly know on an issue is the best way to impress . Not true. Speak to what has been asked. Unlike a GD where you could not delve deep into an issue- you can actually afford to go a little deep into the topic, when asked to elaborate.

Very often,specially in political issues, your interviewer might have opposite views. Don't get over -zealous and try to make your point too forcefully. Disagree with the opposite viewpoint politely but firmly-giving reasons for doing so.

In case they decide to have the Video test in the RTV admissions this year- make sure you look straight into the camera and speak confidently. You will be given two minutes to collect your thoughts. You might get camera-conscious facing it for the first time- that's understandable. Even the board knows that. You can fumble. One only wants to see how quick you can think on your feet, and how confident you are in front of the camera.

Just don't rush your speech and don't get too aggressive in putting across your speech. Remember you are doing this for TV- so its a good idea to get used to the camera right on the outset. If you wish- you can practice small speeches ( called as 'PTC'- Piece-to-camera) at home in front of a mirror.

Always make eye contact when answering the question.Shifty eyes is a sign of nervousness as is shifty hands, Sit straight and never slouch- that will give an impression of you being too lazy or casual.

At the end of the day, it all depends on how you handle the pressure and the questions on that particular day. No amount of guidelines comes in handy at that very moment when you are asked an uncomfortable question or rebut a controversial point. The pointers above are just something which I have figured out of my own experience in my GD and interview in the RTV course in IIMC. They are not to be taken as the byword in anything. Noone knows your strength better than you yourself- so play according to that and you will be fine.

Hello Everyone,

Congratulations for clearing the written examination and making it to the GD and PI, the last hurdle of the Big race.

Let me share with you the exact scenario I faced when called for the GD and PI. trough this 'll try and bring respite to the minds of all those preparing for the ADPR course.For GD, ten short listed applicants were called in.

There were 4 jury members one each from diff fields of advertising- i.e.- creative, PR, client servicing and research. The topic for discussion was "Does a 30 sec commercial really bring about difference in the lives of the audience? Or is it a waste?"We were given 2 minutes to think on the topic before starting it off. I am not sure if the same will be followed this year however, few things to be kept in mind before starting off:

# Do not panic. Calm down and THINK. Don't think oh should I start first? What is he thinking? Oh! She looks intelligent! Just concentrate on the topic and what you feel/ know about it.

# Do not panic if you are not the 1st one to start the discussion. (As preached in most of the GD prep classes in various coaching institutes). If you are the 1st one to speak- make sure you make sense. Don't just rattle off and stop and blabber. It will do you more harm than any good. Wait for the right time and slice in. (I was the 3rd one to speak)

# Do not be aggressive as if you would tear apart your opponent. Be firm and confident in what you are saying. Support your opinion with facts if possible.

# It's important to take a stand. Either speak for or against the topic. Do not tread the middle path. This is the time when you can put forward your thoughts and arguments and convince the jury that you are the right person to be selected.

# Be crystal clear with what you are saying. Support your argument with valid examples.

# There can be a situation where people in the group are both Hindi and English speaking individuals. Address every one while speaking. If need be you can switch to Hindi or English while addressing a concerned participant. This not only helps the discussion to go on smoothly but also adds on few points to your kitty.

# Don't be over confident. It feels that you know a lot but believe you me, when you are out there, the fight gets tougher. That Simple Sam in one corner can make you sweat your heart out.

# In a group discussion it is not only important how you put your points and arguments forward but also how you lead the group. If there is no consensus, or the group is moving away from the topic get them back on track. Lead them.

# Wrap up the discussion within the given time limit. Good if you can come up with a conclusion. In a case of non-consensus, the jury will ask you to sum up and give your views on the topic. Again an opportunity to leave a mark, make best use of it.

As far as the personal interview is concerned it can vary from being very formal to very informal. There can be instances where in you can be asked to present some thing in front of the judges. It will be an activity out of your resume so be sure, what you write in there is what you are. Knowledge on the current affairs, advertising world and different media is a must. They will test your creativity and presence of mind.

Believe me it is not rocket science. Just have faith in your self and nothing is impossible.Few other important things to be kept in mind:Dress properly.Wear a smile.Be honest.These are some of the suggestions I have for all of you. I hope I am able to address some of the issues. Once again all the best and give it your best shot- for the world out there wants some one like you to take charge!

Why should one consider you for IIMC....?

Interviews can be frightening for some. This is primarily because we do not know what questions will be asked. And there is no way you can prepare 100% for it.

So all those who have already got throught the written let me make tell you that you have what it takes to get into IIMC.

Just that we are over populated and IIMC can not take you all, you have to face the interview. So be it. Get set and go. But to ensure that you give your best just ask your self..... a few questions. This is relevant for those opting for EJ and RTV.

Do I know myself. Do I know what I want in life?

Why should one consider you for IIMC?

What do you expect to gain from studying in IIMC?

What do you want to become and why?

No one can answer these questions better than yours truly.

And I am sure you must have ensured the following:

Read last one months magazines and made your relevant observations.

Formed views about issues that are hitting newspapers for the last few weeks.

Written them on paper and read them again and again.

Discussed them with others.

Done some breathing exercises :). An absolute must. Especially before you enter the interview rooms. Do not forget to take a deep breath.

And just in case you are not able to make it, do not give up. The world is open for you. you just need to grap the things that might come your way eventually.

तैयारी करें, टेंशन न लें....

प्रदीप सूरीन वैसे तो आईआईएमसी में हिंदी पत्रकारिता विभाग के छात्र रहे लेकिन जब काम शुरू किया तो अंग्रेजी चैनलों में भी काम करने से परहेज नहीं किया. इस समय वे न्यूज़ एक्स चैनल के एसोसिएट प्रोड्यूसर हैं.

सबसे पहले सभी दोस्तों को बहुत-बहुत बधाई जिन्होंने आईआईएमसी की परीक्षा पास कर ली है. आप सबको इंटरव्यू के लिए चिट्ठी मिलते ही लगने लगा होगा कि चलो अब तो मेरा सेलेक्शन पक्का है और हो भी क्यों न..... लेकिन

जब मुझे इंटरव्यू का लेटर मिला था तो मैंने भी ऐसे ही सोचा था पर मैं उतना रोमांचित नहीं था क्योंकि मैंने इससे पहले भी कई बार इंटरव्यू फेस किया था इसलिए पता था कि यह किसी भी तरह से आसान नहीं होगा.

इंटरव्यू लेटर मिलते ही आप सबसे पहले आईआईएसी की ओर भागते हैं. वहाँ जाकर पता करने की कोशिश करते हैं कि इंटरव्यू में क्या पूछा जाएगा, क्या पूछा जाता है. कैंपस में आपको जगह-जगह इंटरव्यू की तैयारी कराने वाले पोस्टर भी चिपके मिलेंगे जो पंद्रह दिन में एंकर और रिपोर्टर बनाने वाली कंपनियों की तरह दो-तीन दिन में आपको इंटरव्यू की तैयारी कराने का दावा करते हैं.

मेरी सलाह है कि इन सबका कोई फायदा नहीं हुआ है और न होगा.

आप पूछेंगे कि आखिर ऐसे में इंटरव्यू की तैयारी कैसे की जाए. आप बस मेरी कुछ बातों का ध्यान रखें तो इंटरव्यू में आपके चयन की संभावना बेहतर हो जाएगी.

क्या तैयारी करें..?

सबसे पहले तो आप ये समझ लें कि ये कोई यूपीएससी का इंटरव्यू नहीं है. ये पत्रकारिता का इंटरव्यू है और सामने वाला आपसे उन्हीं समझदारी का परिचय देने की अपेक्षा रखेगा, जिसकी उम्मीद एक पत्रकार से की जाती है.

इंटरव्यू में आपमें सिर्फ दो ही चीजों को देखने की कोशिश की जाती है. पहला कि आपको पत्रकारिता की कितनी समझ है और दूसरा कि आजकल की बड़ी खबरों से आप कितना वास्ता और सरोकार रखते हैं. तो मेरी सलाह ये है कि ज्यादा इधर-उधर सर खपाने से अच्छा होगा कि आप फ्रंटलाइन, आउटलुक और इंडिया टुडे के पिछले कुछ महीनों के अंक उठाएँ और चाट जाएँ. फ्रंटलाइन एक अच्छी पत्रिका है इसलिए उसकी कवर स्टोरी को अच्छे से पढ़ें, गहराई से समझें और महत्वपूर्ण मुद्दों को लेकर अपनी एक समझ बनाने की कोशिश करें.

आठ-दस ताजे मुद्दों की लिस्ट बनाएँ और उन्हें अच्छे से तैयार कर लें. आपको सलाह दूंगा कि इन सभी विषयों को किसी एक से नहीं, बल्कि दो या तीन पत्रिकाओं या अखबारों से पढ़कर अपनी राय बनाएं. इससे उस विषय पर आपकी पकड़ मजबूत होगी और उसके अनेक आयाम आपकी समझ में होंगे.

इंटरव्यू किस तरह से होता है....

इंटरव्यू के लिए जब आप जाएँगे तो आपको तीन तरह की प्रक्रिया से गुजरना होगा. पहला, आपके सभी अकादमिक डिग्रियों पर नजर डाली जाएगी. दूसरा, ग्रुप डिस्कशन और तब जाकर होगा इंटरव्यू.

कागजातों की जाँच के बाद आप लोगों के पाँच-छह ग्रुप बना दिए जाएंगे. ग्रुप डिस्कशन और इंटरव्यू दोनों में हिंदी विभाग के हेड होंगे और उनके साथ होंगे दो-तीन बड़े पत्रकार. ग्रुप डिस्कशन में किसी एक कॉमन टॉपिक पर चर्चा करने कहा जाएगा. हर उम्मीदवार को अपने विचार रखने के लिए दो-तीन मिनट का समय मिलेगा. आपको बस इतनी देर में ही उस विषय पर ऐसी बातें रखनी हैं जो सुनने वाले को प्रभावित कर सके.

ग्रुप डिस्कशन के बाद आपको इंटरव्यू के लिए बुलाया जाएगा. आपसे इंटरव्यू में ये जानने की कोशिश की जाएगी कि आप में पत्रकार बनने के कितने लायक हैं. इंटरव्यू पैनल में बैठे लोग ये अच्छी तरह से जानते हैं कि ज्यादातर उम्मीदवार या तो यूपीएससी और बैंकिंग की तैयारी कर रहे होते हैं या फिर मीडिया की चकाचौंध भरी दुनिया में आना चाहते हैं.

इंटरव्यू पैनल आप में इस उम्मीदवार को खोजने की कोशिश करते हैं जिसमें असल पत्रकार बनने का जूनुन होता है. जिन्हें भारत की शक्ल महानगरों के मॉल और उफान मारते शहरी बाजार में ही नहीं विदर्भ और बुंदेलखंड में मर रहे किसानों में भी दिखे. जो सिर्फ टाटा की नैनो के लॉंच की तारीख ही न याद रखे बल्कि ये भी मालूम रखे कि नंदीग्राम, सिंगुर और पॉस्को में लोग क्यों मारे गए.

आप ये जान लीजिए कि आप जैसी ही किसी विषय पर मुँह खोलेंगे, पैनल के लोगों को आपकी गहराई का अंदाजा हो जाएगा. पैनल आपसे कुछ व्यक्तिगत और पढ़ाई-लिखाई से जुड़े सवाल भी पूछ सकता है और आम तौर पर इस तरह से सवाल सबसे पहले पूछे जाते हैं ताकि आपकी नर्वसनेस को खत्म किया जा सके. उसके बाद के सवाल-जवाब में आपका एक गलत जवाब आपको "पाँचवीं पास से ज्यादा तेच नहीं हूँ" बना सकता है.

किन बातों का ध्यान रखें...

अक्सर लोग ये गलतफहमी पाल लेते हैं कि हम हिंदी पत्रकारिता में एडमिशन के लिए आए हैं तो धांसू टाइप की हिंदी बोलने का जबर्दस्त असर होगा. पर ऐसा बिल्कुल भी नहीं है. सलाह ये है कि आप बोलचाल की आम भाषा में जवाब दें और इसमें अंग्रेजी के शब्द आपकी जुबान पर आना चाहें तो उन्हें रोकने की कोई जरूरत नहीं है. असल में पैनल की अपेक्षा रहती है कि बच्चे की हिंदी और अंग्रेजी दोनों ही ठीक हो. और, वैसे भी जिस क्षेत्र में आप कदम रखने जा रहे हैं, वहां इन दोनों भाषाओं की समझ के बिना काम नहीं चलने वाला.

ग्रुप डिस्कशन में आपका वास्ता ऐसे विद्वान लोगों से भी पड़ सकता है जो किसी को बोलने का मौका नहीं देना चाहेंगे. आप उन्हें इशारा करें और अपनी बात रख दें. पैनल की नजर हर चीज पर होती है. किसी को बोलने का मौका न देना और लगातार बोलते रहना नुकसान ही पहुँचाता है. हाँ, बोलते वक्त चिल्लाएं नहीं, आराम से बोलें.

कपड़े सादे पहनें. कुर्ता-पायजामा और चप्पल में न जाएं तो बेहतर है. ये आपके पत्रकार बनने की गारंटी नहीं देते. जींस और टीशर्ट का मोह भी न रखें. पहनावा औपचारिक हो तो भला.

बॉडी लैंग्वेंज का ख़ास ख्याल रखें लेकिन ख्याल रखने के चक्कर में नर्वस होकर आप उसे बिगाड़ भी सकते हैं. कहने का मतलब यह है कि शालीनता के साथ उठें, बैठें, अंदर जाएँ, बाहर निकलें और बात करें.
इंटरव्यू का अनुपात आम तौर पर एक-तीन का होता है. यानी हर तीन में एक ही का चयन होना है. अगर आपको मेरी सलाह का कोई हिस्सा आपके काम आता है तो मेरी कोशिश सफल हो जाएगी और मुजे भी ज़रूर बताएँ.

What is a Group Discussion? Where is it used?

A GD (Group Discussion) is a forum where people sit together, discuss a topic for a certain amount of time with the common objective of finding a solution for a problem or discussing an issue that is given to them.

Why are Group Discussions used as a part of the selection process? How are they useful?

Group Discussions measure certain attributes of the candidates that are otherwise difficult to identify and time consuming to assess. A number of people who can communicate their ideas well and discuss effectively with others in a one-to-one situation become tongue-tied in a group situation.

They will just not be able to present their ideas or discuss their ideas with the other members of the group. A Group Discussion will identify people who have such group communication skills and people who do not possess such group communication skills.

What are the similarities / differences between Group Discussions and Public Speaking / Debating?

Debating and Public Speaking are one-to-many communication situations whereas a Group Discussion is a many-to-many situation. A debate, an elocution or a public speaking contest are solo performances whereas a Group Discussion is NOT. In a debate, it is your individual views that matter. In a Group Discussion, apart from your individual views, he views of the entire group matter.

In Public Speaking / Debating, the speaker can take a particular position on the topic and speak accordingly. In a Group Discussion, all the members of the group will participate and one has to listen to the views of the other members of the group. It is a discussion and the speaker will be "interrupted" by the other members of the group while speaking.

How is a Group Discussion conducted?

A group of candidates are made to sit together in a circular / semi-circular fashion or in a U-shape. There will be a person to co-ordinate the Group Discussion (called the moderator).

After the topic is given, the candidates start discussing the topic amongst themselves. They stop the discussion when the moderator asks them to stop.

How many candidates will there be in a Group Discussion?

The group size could range between eight to fifteen students.

How much time is given for each Group Discussion?

Normally, 15 to 20 minutes.

Are the participants expected to address each other by name?

No. You should address a specific person either by looking at him / her directly or by pointing out to him / her.

What is the role of the moderator?

The primary role of the moderator is to evaluate the performance of every participant. He is the person who tells the group members what they should do, announces the topic and the time for the discussion, keeps track of the time of the Group Discussion and evaluates the performance of the candidates who participated in the Group Discussion. For all practical purposes, he is non-existent once the Group Discussion starts.

Does the moderator write the topic on the board?

The moderator normally does not write the topic on the board. He just reads it out and repeats it once - you have to be attentive while the topic is being given and make sure that you have got the wording right.

Will we be given paper and pen / pencil to note down the topic?

No. You are normally expected to carry your own pen / pencil and paper to a Group Discussion.

Congrats and all the best to the candidates. few things from my side. My GD-PI was a piece of cake...the entire GD group was selected baring a couple. Top was "Brand Wars-how relevant are they to audience."

The idea is to let the discussion happen. Dont get into arguments. And you need not dominate it. Just speak your points clearly, which what i did. As for the PI extra curicullars help if you want to get into creatives.

U might be asked to make a jingle on the spot. I was asked to make one on IIMC and sing it out. Someone else from our batch was asked to make one on juices...

Know the basics...like the name of some ad agencies...watch lots of tv...

अब तो छोटा सा कदम बाकी है...

श्रीमती वर्तिका नंदा आईआईएमसी में अध्ययन-अध्यापन दोनों का अनुभव रखती हैं. आईआईएमसी में शिक्षण के दौरान 'टेलीविजन और अपराध पत्रकारिता' नाम से उनकी एक किताब आई थी जो इस विधा के छात्र-छात्राओं के लिए बहुत उपयोगी साबित हुई है. वे एनडीटीवी और लोकसभा चैनल से लंबे समय तक जुड़ी रहीं हैं और इस समय सहारा इंडिया (सहारा के सभी समाचार चैनलों) की प्रोग्रामिंग हेड हैं.

लीजिए, आपने बड़ा कदम तय कर लिया. अब छोटा सा कदम बाकी है.

इंटरव्यू की चिट्ठी हाथों में आते ही सपने उड़नखटोले पर बैठकर सात समंदर पार की सैर करने लगते हैं. इंटरव्यू की तारीख इस बीच कब आ जाती है, पता भी नहीं चलता. इसलिए जरूरी है कि इस दौर में सपने तो देखे जाएं लेकिन मन लगाकर तैयारी भी कर ली जाए.

चाहे इंटरव्यू हो या ग्रुप डिस्कशन, इन बातों पर खास ध्यान देना चाहिएः-

# बोली-अबोली-दोनों बातें गंभीरता से कही जाएं. अबोली यानी वे चीजें जो आप अपनी जुबान से तो
नहीं बोल रहे लेकिन आपकी बॉडी लैंग्वेज उसे कह रही है. इसलिए शारीरिक-हाव-भाव पूरी तरह से आपके नियंत्रण में रहने चाहिए. इसके लिए नाटकीय तैयारी न करें बल्कि वास्तविक रूप से भी
खुद को पूरी तरह से सहज रखने की आदत डालें.

# याद रखें कि आप किसी वाद-विवाद प्रतियोगिता में नहीं आए हैं. जीडी के दौरान जो आपके साथ हैं, वे भी आप ही की तरह यहां एक सीट पाने की कोशिश में हैं और जो आपका इंटरव्यू ले रहे हैं, वे आपसे काफी सीनियर हैं. इसलिए अपनी बात को सम्मान के साथ ही कहें.

# अगर आपसे राजनीति से जुड़ा कोई सवाल पूछ लिया जाता है तो आप अपनी निजी राय न थोपें. किसी पार्टी विशेष की गुणगान सिर्फ इसलिए न करने लगें क्योंकि आपका उससे कोई नाता है. भावी पत्रकार से निष्पक्ष होने की उम्मीद की जाती है, किसी पार्टी का प्रवक्ता बनने की नहीं.

# जाहिर तौर पर आप उस दिन की कुछ अखबारें पढ़ कर जाएं (सिर्फ एक ही अखबार तक खुद को समेट लेना बिल्कुल सही नहीं होगा). बेहतर होगा कि तैयारी के इस दौर में पिछले एकाध महीने के 3 से 4 समाचार पत्रों के संपादकीय आप ठीक से पढ़ लें.

# एक और बात. संस्थान के बुनियादी तथ्य जान कर ही जाएं. अगर आप हिंदी पत्रकारिता के लिए इंटरव्यू दे रहे हैं तो ये न कहें कि चूंकि आप आरटीवी की परीक्षा में पास नहीं हो सके हैं, इसलिए आप यहां आ गए हैं. अगर आप को लगता है कि आप हिंदी या अंग्रेजी प्रिंट के कोर्स के साथ न्याय नहीं कर पाएंगे तो फिर आपको इंटरव्यू देकर किसी और का हक नहीं लेना चाहिए.

# अगर अपनी सीट पक्की करने के लिए आपने कोई दूसरी तरकीब अपनाई हो तब भी पूरी तरह से सहज रहें क्योंकि यह कतई जरूरी नहीं है कि किसी दूसरी वजह से ही आप चुन लिए जाएं. बल्कि ऐसी स्थिति में आपका जरूरत से ज्यादा आत्मविश्वास ही आपकी नैया डूबो सकता है.

दरअसल इंटरव्यू की शुरूआत से अंत तक अगर आप खुशमिजाज और सहज-सरल बने रहेंगे तो आपके लिए अपनी जगह बनाना आसान हो जाएगा. यह याद रखिए कि जो सादा होता है, एक उम्र के बाद अक्सर वही भाता है और जो लोग आपका इंटरव्यू लेंगें, वो उसी उम्र और अनुभव के करीब होंगे( इसका मतलब उम्रदराज होना नहीं बल्कि मानसिक रूप से परिपक्व होना है).

इसलिए मुस्कुराइए और अपने सपनों को अपनी आंखों में भरकर इंटरव्यू का सामना करने चले जाइए.

No room for boys in IIMC...

India's premier mass communication institute, the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) is contemplating to allot the newly constructed hostel meant for boys to girls.

The hostel was sanctioned by the controlling authority of the IIMC, about four years ago for boys, as they have to live in expensive rented accommodations in the areas like Munirka, Ber Sarai and Katwaria Sarai near the institute.

Problem child?

IIMC, which is all set to gain the status of "International Media University", already offers hostel facility to the girls. The management fears that girls may face "problems" due to the boys hostel in campus.

A Head of Department (HOD) of the institute said, "The management thinks that the 'coexistence' of both the genders may lead to unhealthy relationships between them and allotting the new hostel to boys would mean fuelling the disorder."

Another IIMC professor said, "This is an absolute nonsense. The youngest student in IIMC would be of more than 21 years and if adults want to get intimate, they can do it without living close to each other."

An official from the institute added that the management should take a cue from the Jawaharlal Nehru University, next to the IIMC, where boys and girls have common hostels.

When MiD DAY tried to contact the IIMC management, they refused to comment on the issue saying that they have not taken the final decision on the issue. Stuti Kakkar, director of the institute was not available for comment.

Interview: a personality test, not a intelligence test...

First of all it's very important to remember that interview is a 'personality test' and not intelligence test, which has been already tested by the written test.

Your overall personality, the way you present yourself and articulate your ideas are all important.

Even if you have done very well in the written exam, the 15 marks of interview can be very crucial for your getting admission into the course, so you cannot ignore the interview.

General awareness is of great importance. Be very aware of the hot current issues and thoroughly discuss and analyze with your friends or family, the various aspects of the issues like the recent fuel hike…the reasons its fallout, Karnataka elections etc.

Prepare for the interview with through knowledge of your home state, its problems, and any current issues in your state, specialty of your home town etc. For eg, I was asked, what are the two most severe problems of my district?

Since, I belong to tribal dominated district my answer was – unemployment and drinking. The fact is your answers should show our general awareness and presence of mind.

I think the best way to prepare for an interview is to get into the shoes of the interviewer itself. What are the probable questions he or she might ask to judge your personality.

Questions can be asked about a wide range of topics like hobbies, who is your favourite journalist and why do you like him or her especially in print, Which newspaper do you like to read and why? Who is its editor etc, what beat one could like to take, about the beat. Questions from your education background are also asked.

Remember that IIMC has a Development journalism course and DJ is also part of course in English Journalism therefore your answers should have a welfare oriented ring to them. And questions related to developmental issues could also be asked.

On the day of your interview relax and please read the day's newspaper, it is every important.

Appearance matters! So be neatly dressed, and present a pleasant and confident self to the interviewers.

If you are not very fluent with English and cannot express yourself well in the language, then my suggestion is to constantly speak in the language to better express yourself during the D day.

There's is nothing more interesting than to write How to do something. But unfortunately, sometimes, it is the most boring thing to read. However, I hope, my words will benefit the future IIMCians.

For interview: The standard questions asked are:

Why do u want to join journalism?
Answer for this questions = no of readers. Nothing very fundo. All you need to do is to be clear in your head. Do you really want to do it? Or coming just for another interview. Many people have a notion that journalism is not a very well paying job. Initially you will feel, that your MBA would have been better.

Trust me, its 100% false. Money is floating in the air, and you just have to be smart enough to grab it. Coming back to the interview, you can quote examples which have influenced your decision to become a journalist. It doesn't mean that the life-changing incedent has to evolve from a personal experience. It can be fictional also. If you can justify yourself, you are half way through.

Why IIMC?
I hope, I don't have to answer this question. IIMC is the best. Noted journalist have been trained here. And the recent generation of IIMCians is ferociously working towards the progress of the institute. If you are still fiddling for an answer, you can say: Quality of faculties, friends who have studied from the instittue (if you know any one). Be it IIMC or any other institute, always remember, every insittute has an ego. So, don't try to be oversmart.

These are the two basic questions which will be asked to you.

For the GD or group discussion:

Quote news reports extensively. The more you'd quote them, the brighter your chances will be. Unlike GDs for B-schools, the concentration is on the person's knowledge, while behaviour is not extremely important. This does not mean that you turn the meeting into a fish market.

Don't exhibit your lexicon. Keep your points short and simple. You should present your views in a balanced way. Take a side. Avoid being neutral (there's nothing wrong in it) on subject of discussion.

If you have more queries, shoot them, many IIMCians will answer that.

Know how to present the little that you know properly...

Hello friends....

I was a student of English journalism, 2005-06 batch of IIMC New Delhi. I am sure after clearing the written test all of you must be excited as well as nervous about the interview.

I am not going to write any points on how to do well in the interview because you will get the standard tips in any good personality development article. What I will do is give an account of my experience and hope that it is of some help to you too.

Well, the interview panel will have at least three people, including one of the faculty members and other two or three journalists. As the panelists keep changing every year, there is no fixed formula as to what they are looking for in a candidate. But I will tell you how I prepared for it.

The interview can last for anything between 10-20 minutes or maybe more in some interesting cases. You don't have a lot of time to impress the interviewer, so state your views clearly and to the point.

Be very thorough with the various socio-political events happening in your state because if you don't know about your own home, there is no point just knowing what Bush or Manmohan said.

Next, world events are also important, so obviously have a rough idea about important developments on issues which have a direct impact on India, like the falling dollar, oil crisis, inflation — everything is related.

Remember that the interviewer is not looking for the perfect answer, it's OK not to know all the facts, but you should know how to present the little that you know properly, with your original views.

Even if you don't agree with the panelists, you should put your argument well, with valid points and examples. So while preparing, you can make a checklist of the latest developments and note down small points that you can remember. It's OK to be nervous and fumble.

My first question was "Why do you want to be a journalist?" — the most obvious and simplest question, and I just blabbered something, as I am always uncomfortable with general or personality-related questions. So if you are not the spontaneous type, I would suggest do some mock interviews with friends about basic questions like this.

I always thought these kind of questions are not very important and one should concentrate on GK. But it gives you more confidence and later for my job interviews I was always better prepared.

Lastly, no matter how much you prepare be ready for the unexpected. At the particular moment you may forget everything you studied, so don't mug up anything, just form your own strong views because that always stays with you no matter in what situation you are and you can present it well.

I hope this helps and you can be part of this wonderful institute. (By the way, you will really have to slog it out here and also after you join a media organization, so be prepared for the drill).
